Interesting... The plan you pose seems partly dubious to me as there is nothing which signals you should attack king side. Why do you chose to attack kingside when the center is by far the better place to attack? You are ahead in development, you have attacked the queen forcing the loss of time by black which means you should play Nf3 Bc4 0-0 Rfe1 Be3 Qd2 Rad1 and blast through. Furthermore, after c6 the bishop on g2 is doing nothing. Not that this is a bad move the bishop does exert pressure on squares (but not on pieces/pawns!) and after Bf4! attacking the queen again the position would have been very favourable for white. It seems that the move g3 had two points, the fianchetto and the Bf4 attacking the queen.

Broadly speaking far1ey is right to suggest it is a bit too early to think specifically of a K-side attack. However, I form the impression that himu is not especially familiar with this opening - no more am I. Some such long term plan or goal might serve, then, as an aid to deciding where to place one's pieces so early in the game. The move chosen might not be ideal, but it does advance White's game, and does no harm to his position. Moreover, there is a little "trap" for the unwary: 5...Qc6 (attacking the h-rook) 6.Bb5!

[ionadwoman] is right I havent played scandi, so thought to treat it as a badly played dragon. where I would do almost the same. I would like to cancel the dark colored bishops as soon as possible. and then restrict queen side pawn charge from black. it seems too nive but intuitively I tought it would not be much worse than putting my foot into an opening where I dont know any variations and have no confidence.

There is nothing wrong with c6. A key factor in the Scandi is that black will want to create a lockdown on the d5 square via c6, e6, Nf6. Therefore, Nd7 is a good move when the knight can be transfered to d5 via f6/b6.

The problem for black in this position - The bad bishop.

At this point it is not easy to see how Black is going to free it, neither! ...Bd2 means black will have soon to advance the e- or c-pawn, weakening his hold on d5; and ...b6 (or ...b5) weakens c6, which is already under pressure. "Houston: I think we might have a problem..."

In view of my comment on the last move, I would have been inclined to play Ne2, to avoid interdicting the g2-Bishop's action on the long diagonal. A judgment call.

OK, himu wanted to castle Queen side - but what I like about this is that Black can not be sure that is really what White intends. There's a lot to be said for 9.0-0, or even, having played 9.Qd2, playing 0-0 subsequently. All these will lead to very different games. All Black can do is play non-committally. 9...0-0 suggests itself...

Although technically a "bad" Bishop, and hence a candidate for exchanging for a Knight, White's dark-square Bishop is too useful to the planned K-side action to be let go lightly. That the response gains a tempo doesn't make the decision any harder!

... and protecting d4 as well!

If you have read my first comment it is only now that white should be thinking of a king side attack. With kings on opposite sides it gives white an excellent excuse to go after the king.

Again the typical clamp down on d5 maneuvre.

At once 12.g4 wouldn't have been my first thought here. It seems to hasten the f5-Knight onto a better location at d5. At move 12, I would have been inclined to ask the Black Queen what she would do in response to 12.a3. After 12...Qa5 13.g4 Ne7 14.Bd6 Re8, 15.Ne5 looks promising for White. If 12...Qe7, then 13.Ne4 threatens to win a piece by 14.g4. Finally, if the Queen were to move 12...Qc4 then she would find 13.Bf1 acutely embarrassing! True, 12.a3 is weakening to White's castled position, but in the circumstances White can afford this, particularly as it relieves the immediate pressure on his Q-wing, and keeps at a distance any propect of undesirable Queen exchanges.

A bad plan? Certainly not! White should be given credit for ignoring blacks counterplay and attacking k-side. Perhaps at the start a king side attack was the wrong plan but not now!! Plans can change in an instant!

Correct! White is ahead in development and better positioned. Black has many pieces to develop and still hasnt even gotten his pawn storm rolling! Exchanging queens would only be favourable if blacks attack would get there first.

It might be worth seeing what's wrong with 14...Nxc3 15.Bxf8 Nxa2ch 16.Kb1 ... and Black discovers he has lost a whole rook.

I award this with a ! although I wonder what others think. As per my other comment the queens on the board favours white even though the queen side is now a bit open how does black exploit this? The rooks are screwed, the bishop is dead the knight takes to a decent spot... Queens on the board is good.

Hmmmmm It depends, how does the queen on a3 or a5 affect the king side defence anyways? True the queen can come back to c7 from a5 and e7 from a3. Either way this is winning for white.

Black has a scheme that in fact emerges over the next few moves. The White King has to be on b1 rather than c1 for it to work. So this is understandable from Black's point of view. However, he might have been a little more subtle in the sequel...

! Black knows he must get his pieces into play. This is a good move. And Nxe5 f6 Nxg6 hxg6 h5! gives white a good advantage in my immediate opinion but I must look into it more deeply.

But before continuing, observe black's threat: Mate in 4 (19...Bxa2ch 20Ka1 Bb3ch 21.Kb1 Qa2ch 22.Kc1 Qa1#.

! Good move!!! ? The bishop trade helps white. The white bishop is blacks main attacking piece whites white bishop is doing nothing. Not even attacking the king side. Bxd5 Bxd5 Rd8! seems to provide confusions for black however. I'll write another comment later about the analysis of this line...

Maybe 19.d5 Bxd5 20.Bxd5 Rd8 21.Qf4 f6 22.g5 f5 23.Bb3 and White keeps his extra piece. Otherwise the exchanges on d5 seem at first sight to leave White in command of the board. But after 19.d5 Bxd5 20.Bxd5 cxd5 21.Qxd5 Black can try 21...Nc6 since 22.Nxc6? bxc6 23.Qxc6? Rab8ch wins for Black! Generally, exchanges help the defence, especially if the defender lacks development. Maybe 19.c4 was to be preferred.
