We started with a king pawn opening

2.f3? and 2...f6? are both bad moves. You should try to get your pieces out in the opening, like for example 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Nc3 Nf6, or something similar.

3.g4 is not a dangerous move, it does not really accomplish anything. 3...d6 is a good response, but 3...Nc6 or 3...Bc5 was also good.

He's trying to attack on the kingside, but forgetting that he also has to develop pieces.

With this move, though, White has for the moment covered the weakness he has allowed to appear along the e1-h4 diagonal. Had Black been a little less conservative in her opening moves, White might have found himself in deep strife right now.

Try to get your pieces out first. White is not really attacking (his attack won't get far if he does not sustain it with his pieces), so no defensive measures are necessary. Instead, you can start to think of attacking yourself.

(?) This is a terrible mistake. White has overlooked the (half)-pin on the h-pawn after 5...hxg5. He'd just about have to play 6.h5, as 6.hxg5 Rxh1 wins a Rook for Black.

6.hxg5?? was a blunder, because 6...Rxh1 wins a free rook.

...or played 7...Be6. Best was probably 7...Nh6, with 8...Qf6 to follow. White might have to give up the Rook for a minor piece - still bad for Black, but at least the damage will have been contained - even reduced.

8...Be6, attacking the rook, also came into consideration. She has to spend some moves to defend it, while you can attack and develop your forces: 9.Rh8 Qf6 10.Rh1.

After 8. ... Be6, I'd go with 9. RxB+. Still two pieces up, black's king is stuck in the centre and black won't be gaining tempi on the rook.

I'd be inclined to play 8...g4. this is 'Hope Chess', but when you have gone and blown away so much material you might as well play for cheapos. The sneaky plot is that if White takes this g-pawn then this happens: 8...g4!? 9.fxg4?? Qh4ch 10.Ke2 (this is forced: White has no option) 10...Bxg4ch 11.Ke3 Bxd1! and Black wins the Queen!

But missing your attack.

I was about to say 10.Rh8 was essential, but in fact 10.Rxg6 would have been better.

Better to move a different piece - 11.Nh3, say, threatening 12.Bxg5.

This is a mistake, ufortunately. Better was 11...Nc6.

Cuts the Queen off from defending c7.

This is a good move. He did realize that you could get out of check, but he saw that he could win your rook after that. You just blocked off the defence of the c7 square by playing 11...Nd7. If you had played 11...Nc6, he could not play 12.Nxc7+ because you could respond by taking his knight with your queen (12...Qxc7).

I'd play 12...Kd8 so you can try to win his knight with after he takes your rook by walking to it with your king and then taking it.

This was the consequence of 12.Nxc7+.

Black has this positive: her pieces (or some of them) are in action: White's have yet to mobilise. I include the a8-Knight in this remark: taking the Rook has taken it out of play. Now: can Black do anything interesting before White mobilises? It don't look very likely!
