Earth Life...
This is not so much a political venue... so where better to express my recent view of some life on Earth and ask if you have seen the equal?

I live in a large city in the U.S.A. (San Diego). I live in a relatively new (20 years) subsection of tract homes. I live in a quiet section that has grown vegetation such that I can almost imagine being alone in the countryside. My house is situated so that the backyard is facing westwards and the area to my west is "common grounds" up a hill, meaning there is no building permitted there. It is "common grounds" maintained by the association so that, while there is a path for people to walk on above my property, relatively few do and it is preserved very natural. Few can see into my property and I am pretty secluded, relatively speaking.

I have lived here 11, going on 12, years and I have never seen what I saw tonight. Maybe I have just missed it, but I think tonight was special.

At the top of the hill to my west, from my backyard, are two Queen Palms. They might be 30 to 40 yards uphill. They are majestic and have been the object of my enjoyment since I've been here. I watch the sun set behind the hill and watch their silhouettes become more the dominant feature of the night.

I like to recall (from Vietnam days) their use as references and speculate that if a squad were out there, saying they were 100 meters south of the palms, then I could aim my mortar 30 degrees left and add two increments to drop a round in on that position. Any any such references would work throughout a long dark night. (Sorry, idle speculation & remembrances)

But, in these recent years I have taken to enjoying the sunsets, BBQing, drinking a barley pop or two, and noting that I don't need to keep track of the night time references anymore. But I do still notice the surroundings. And, I do notice how special and pretty it is.

TONIGHT I noticed something even more special. I have not seen this in the 11 or 12 years I have been here BBQing and drinking, so it's neither of those although I was doing both.

As I watched my sun set behind the hill, I watched my trees up the hill, blowing in the wind. It seemed that every leaf on those two Queen Palms had a little bright light attached to their end and they were switching ON with every movement of the leaf! They were literally glowing in the wind, flowing with light, waving at the world... yelling and shouting "WE ARE HERE, WE ARE ALIVE, and WE ARE GREAT". (they seemed happy to say the least)

My "scientific" self tries to explain this as the fact that we had a wet, cold Winter storm pass through here yesterday. The leaves are still wet. The front is still moving through and the winds are still fairly strong. The temperature is still brisk. The Sun was setting and reflecting just properly for my angle to get the glistening reflections.

My "emotional" self says that I've witnessed life expressing itself just as my dog expresses itself when he realizes we ARE going for a walk. It IS happy.

What do you think?
Have you witnessed life being happy?
I say I just did!

I understand. I've had such a moment. Time seems to slow down in than moment, to pause and everything is so clear and vibrant, so real, so perfect. It touches your soul.

I'm sure you have felt this too... being awake just before first light when all is calm, not a leaf stirs, it is still dark but morning is coming... and then a silent, quiet shock wave passes by and the leaves all shudder and bend to the silent shock wave of first light passing around the globe just in front of first light, announcing the beginning of day.

Plant life being happy
A group of us used to play under a weeping willow when we were kids, it seemed to be happy almost engaging with part of our play.

Being happy with the world around you is almost a buddhist awakening when you have a highlighted sense of everything. Its a poetic moment, I think those that spend more time with nature feel nature more than city people.
