ATTENTION: AWESOME IDEA!!!!
Ooops.

We've all said it. Whether it be surveying a less than propitious move of our own making or seeing an opponent negligently move their rook into the killing zone of a knight or far-flung bishop, Ooops moves are the chess equivalent of unforced errors in tennis. Unlike tennis a single unforced error in chess usually spells doom for the player who made it. The bugger of it is that ooops moves can occur right in the middle of a fantastic and enthralling game, for myself an ooops move by a good opponent is (almost) just as annoying as if I had made the blunder myself. Suddenly a battle royale of strategy and patience turns into a lay down mazier.

Would it not be brilliant if players (premium subscribers) could issue challenges (unrated) with a pre-configured board? This way one or other player could restore a finished ooops game back to the point prior to the ooops, like a Marty McFly of chess! Is this not an awesome idea? I'm curious for feedback if there is a groundswell of support I shall take the idea to the Chess Openings forum and then instigate a mass contacting of the hardworking GK staff to make this so.

Or get drunk and forget about the whole thing. Either/or.

Cheers,
Tipsy

No need for a "pre-configured" board, just a take back feature should do.

you could always re-challenge the player and agree to make the same opening series of moves to reach the required position.

when starting a mini-tournament you can create a Setup Starting Position. I'm sure this option could be reapplied to regular challenges.

Well, let's say you are in move 25, screw up and then have to recreate the entire thing? I think a take back feature is easier.

they'll never do take back jc

Well, they have "unrated", so why not "unrated" with the option of "take-back" for training purposes?

a long time ago
in a galaxy that bore a startling resemblance to this one, so much so that, in fact, it was this galaxy, I had a different GK username, which I can't even recall and played very rarely. Then for years I played no chess at all until, a couple of years ago, I returned anew and was reborn as drunkennovice. Now I am tipsyjourneyman and perhaps, one day, I shall realise my full potential and become the inebriatedmaster.   Anyway back when I was ???? GK *DID* have a take-back feature. Players could make the request and it was up to the opponent to approve. And if you thought Sauron's ring was trouble, well, it was an olive branch compared to the take-back feature. So, they did once have a take-back but they'll never be that foolish again! At least, not for rated games.

Still, in an unrated game that's not a bad idea JC but it doesn't solve my problem of these moves occurring in the normal course of a rated game. Rechallenging and trying to recreate the exact same position is, as JC points out, WTMFE. As chilli points out, you can set up preconfigured mini tourneys, that is where I got the idea from in the first place, since they have that for tourneys why not single unrated challenges? I can understand why not for rated challenges, could lead to ratings manipulation for those pathetic individuals that care solely about improving their rating rather than improving their chess. But for unrated challenges sent by premium subscribers I cannot see why there should be objections. Such games could be not just for ooops games but also for the same reason as why the feature exists in mini-tourneys, to explore a given opening or position for the betterment of one's chess.

Anyway, happy new year in advance everybody! May all your chess dreams and ambitions come true in 2013. And may the cats win another flag!

I've been here for a few years and I don't remember it (doesn't mean it wasn't there) - can you please tell me more about the take back feature?

to get it reinstated I nominate jc to take up the cause with GK!

catch you all in 2013

The take back feature had to be here before 2003 because it wasn't here when I joined. Actually, it would be a feature I would use. I regularly play unrated training games where we play through portions of text games and various lines the authors suggest as a way of learning openings. A take back button would be nice.

@Tipsy: since you've been tossed out of several clubs and God only knows how many people have you on their ignore list, you could probably benefit from some smack points from presenting an idea with some merit to it. What do you think of the idea of you drafting a message to GK about your idea, post it here for us to review and comment on and then you forward the final draft to the Administration?

JC: actually I haven't been tossed out of a single club. At least not virtual online message clubs. Physical licenced clubs with physical bouncers on the other hand.....well...back in my youth....   And "smack points" ??? Unless these points actually allow me to legally acquire and distribute smack for profit....not interested in them. I think you will also find I've presented many an idea with merit to it over the journey, and a few howlers. Still I may just go about drafting that message but I doubt one nicely worded message to admin will achieve much. It would need to have something of a petition quality about it with a list of users who agree. Something to do in the new year.

All: The take-back was back in GK's inception round late 1990's-2001. Actually wikipedia tells me GK showed up in 2000 so 2000-2001. Worked the same way as a draw offer which could be accepted/declined except of course it resulted in reversal of the last move. Led to many a nasty message in chat I think when refused. Did not last long.

I thought you got tossed from Club Captain. My mistake, must have been thinking of someone else.
