I agree. Nothing offered. A strong defense of their decision and a vague promise to include non-premium team members in the forums. I think I am getting fed up and the tone of the forums is just going downhill. I get the feeling that they'd sooner concentrate on tournament and league chess and that team chess is possibly a nuisance for them. I don't know.... Reading the GK forum and the Captain's forum it just seems that the issue will never go away. GK has made up its mind and the captains will have to like it or lump it. How can there be a reconciliation of the two solitudes? Ach... I need to spend more time on the grill thread. LOL!

Response from GK
GK was quick to reply:

Message from GameKnot customer support:
Hello, kneilca2,

Thank you for your feedback. However, there was no "cutback of messaging
services". We have instead replaced the outdated and obsolete method of
communicating with your team via individual private messages with a team forum,
which is a much better and more advanced venue. It works very similarly to
private messages, including the fact that only the team members can read your
team forum and everyone on the team is instantly notified about any new posts,
but it also allows for posting of larger messages, it allows for finer control
over each message thread, all forum messages are retained for as long as the
team exists, individual posts can be deleted, etc. etc., the improvements are
too many to mention.

Thank you for choosing GameKnot as your premier chess battlefield!

Best regards,

No dog in that fight
@kneilca2: WOW! That team messaging thing has definitely struck a nerve. In the GK world, money talks and that's the way to get their attention.

The team messaging has no impact on PAUL MORPHY. First off, we are a small team and we mostly communicate on an individual basis and secondly, when we post something (which is rare), most team members read it. We have found Google's chat to work well for conference chats for myself and the two co-captains when we need to have a sit-down, but cc'ing messages to each other works for the day-to-day stuff.

@kneilca2: I see you have and it doesn't look like GK has any current plans to restore that "outdated and obsolete method of communicating".

That reply from GK is just so patronising! How do you contact GK? I want to give them a gob full myself.

I posted this in another forum.
The team forum actually works fine for getting messages to the team. The entire team is notified that there is a new message waiting for them. We've actually gained from this. Premium members are allowed responses that the entire team can see. Non-premium members have the same option that they had before, which is to respond in a private message.
The issue here is that we want our non-premium members to be able to respond in our forums. That's what we should be fighting for.
On the issue of improved communications, we also should ask that GK allow private communications between the captain and all co-captains of a team to converse. Would it not be good to be able to discuss team challenges with all your captains at the same time without having to send private messages to each?
I think we were all used to the "message the team" function and are over reacting to its removal.

Contacting GK
@petemellor:

Use the Site Map link at the very bottom of any page. Click on "Contact Gameknot" under Account Management. Type in your subject (e.g., messages) and submit and then go to the last FAQ answer and click on the "'click here' to send a message to GameKnot's customer support."

That's all well and good, Clint, if you as a team were already using the team forum for that purpose. But for those of us who were relying on team messages to get our message across, I totally agree with kneilca"'s message to GK. The action was unilateral, and gave teams no transition period to change a new form of communication.

Let me give you an example....

When I would set up a mini-tournament, I would use team messaging to invite members to join, and I would get about half a dozen replies. Now, I've had to set up a thread on team messages, and I've got absolutely no replies in nearly a week!

As I said on the GK thread, teams like mine needed time to get members to adjust. I've asked GK how I can do that, without sending an individual PM to every team member, and to date GK refuses to reply....

It is this heavy-handed approach by GK which infuriates us....
