Seems like a Bad joke!
"Congratulations on being the winner of your group in the 1st round of Intermediate Chess section, 95th GameKnot tournament! However, due to your top rating in the past 90 days exceeding the limits of this section, as per GameKnot tournament rules, you have been automatically moved to the next higher section. An additional announcement will be sent when the next round in that section is about to start."

Seemingly a great congrats until I get to the part that I'm being moved up to the ADV section that pretty much sports all 1600+ rated guys. My rating climbed to 1504 in the past 90 days and I currently sit at 1400. What the !@$#@$^ ????

I guess on a good note, if I do manage to win a game or two it will really destroy someones rating haha!

Maybe the note should have have read....

"Good job of kicking the snot out of your opponents. We've decided to humble you down some and put you in the 'screw you' category of the next bracket. Step up or step off... Most of all have fun getting destroyed!"

Common sense 1, Algorithms 0... or in this case should we declare the algorithm the winner, since it defeats common sense?

Ha, another reason why the average rating should be used as a guideline instead of the 90 high-----I HATE THE 90 HIGH LIMITATIONS THAT TEAMS PUT AS A REQUISITE FOR TEAM MATCHES---you know who you are----the ones that really irk me is those that have these restrictions within 50 points and 50 points of the 90 day high, THEN SEND ME A CHALLANGE WITH PLAYERS 150 POINTS BELOW THEIR 90 DAY HIGH---there I got that off my chest---lol

Well - I got dispatched 6 new games today with players that are all +200 / 250 on me. As much as I figured I'd get destroyed I've found may way to +3 on move 14 for one of them. Odd. the higher rated players dont seem to be what I expected.

Sounds strange huh?

Ha, don't know if you're being sarcastic or not my friend, but with over 4500 completed games on this site, I have seen a lot of strange things. I'll just say that a some of my non-team game wins against higher rated players have been taken with a little "grain of salt". lol

Dan - it's strange. Honest talk here. These guys are all rated higher than me in every regard, 90 day aor etc... But it seems like the jest guy I'll be able to take down . Does that mean I'm learning? Or lucky? I'm not sure.

Regardless I'll do my best and take it as a learning experience...

Well, whatever the case, it can't hurt playing better competition. No one gets better playing someone with a lot lower rating. There are some really great players that give me games whom have a much higher rating than mine. They have nothing to gain by playing against me other than the love of the game of Chess and the willingness to give me a lesson. I tip my hat to these players------

@penndan: I always thought my games with you made me better.

Ha, my record against you is 2-16-1----exactly how much better did I make you? I think you are just returning the compliment from the previous post because you are one among many that I was referring to in helping to increase my chess intellect. lol

@Dan: Yes I agree 100% I've been playing an 1800 woman from Denmark that I ABSOLUTELY WANT TO TAKE DOWN. She's been kind enough to entertain my attempts. First game I was destroyed positionally on by move 13. Second game has gone much better but I fear I'll fall again but I've been able to maintain a positional fight up until move 20. I continue to learn. She continues to wreck me but talks about it after the game is complete.

@Johnclark: How did your team match go against her? This is skakmusan (not sure if I spelled that right). Geez she's brutal on the chess board.

@penndan: Those are kind words indeed. Glad to be of help to you.

But I don't agree with the idea that one only learns by losing. I think much can be gained from a well executed attack. Isn't it important to know what works as well as what doesn't? Looking forward to playing you again.

@:brianinpdx: We are leading the match 1.5-.5. Our 2300 player won one and drew the other. I'm about to lose one but just might draw the other, unless I try for a win. I have a couple of hours left to make that decision.

@ everyone (haha): Some interesting points brought up here. I see what John is saying about a well executed attack. When I was learning an opening like Qgambit the coach wanted me to play 20+ games with it, to really learn the traps, and different lines etc. Had I gone and played it against people 3x my rating, I probably would have walked away with not really learning much.

However, I dont know if you guys are like me in the question I have about where my ability chess wise ends. I find myself wanting to attack people higher up the food chain. I find myself realizing I can hold my own. For example, 1570 guy I'm +3 on right now, fell into a leveraged trap just the same way some guys do that are ranked 12xx. Who knows if I'll win the game, but I'll sure try. It makes me wonder at what level, NO mistakes are made. Guessing grand master?

I remember reading someplace that after the first 8 moves there is something like 1.5M combinations. How could the human mind grasp all of that... to me this is why chess is so fantastic.

The update: As you remember my lovely friends at GK pushed me into the ADV category RND2 because my peek rating climbed to 150. When the tourney started I was sitting at 1388.

I'm happy to report I managed to win 3/6 games against guys rated 150-200 pts higher than me. Interestingly, this bracket might end up with each player winning exactly three games. Heck, I might advance in a tie.

HAHA - wont it be funny if I make round 3 sitting at 1400.
