Movie showdown!!
I don't get to watch TV much. I'm quite the busy bee, but when I do, I hate spending a lot of time figuring out what I want to watch and to be honest, I'm quite picky when it comes to movies. So here's what I'm asking from you guys. Mention 2 movies you think are good (old, new, it don't matter) then choose which one you think is best. If someone in the club disagrees, please explain why w/o giving the movie away for those who haven't seen it.

I'll go first....

The Dark Knight vs. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight hands down! I don't think any villain (from comic books that is) can match the Joker's character. TDKR is really good though, I've taken my son twice to see it at the theatre. Anne Hathaway was good but her and Halle Berry have nothing on Michelle Pfifer as Cat Woman.

Us old timers consider a batman movie old only if it stars Adam West.

I assume you are asking to compare re-makes or serials.

Alright. The Manchurian Candidate which was done starring Denzel Washington (2004) which is a pretty good movie.

Of course the original 1962 movie starring Laurence Harvey with Angela Lansbury(!) as his evil mother and Frank Sinatra is better.

The problem is you can't better perfection.

That movie was slated to come out when JFK was assassinated, and it was pulled because the movie deals with a political assassination and released later.

It is impossible
to mention just two movies and then pick the best. My wife and I go see a movie on the weekends (that's our big deal entertainment) so we see maybe three a month on average. Most are very good, very entertaining, great escapes from the work week, all the acting and graphics these days are terrific. (I really enjoy the acting skills even if I hate the actors' politics, so I put that out of my mind).

I will mention just one film that had the most impact on me, even though it may nor be the "best" (although it is in my mind).

I had just seen Apollo 13... the story about the 3rd attempt to land on the moon, that had an explosion on board while en route to the moon. It was a harrowing account of the many things that went wrong and the extraordinary things that were done to get them home safely.

I had witnessed (via the news) when it was actually happening.

So, I am all impressed and I go out into my front yard and my neighbor is in his front yard. We start chatting and I tell him about Apollo 13. He says he saw it too and I ask him what he thought.

He says, "well the actors didn't look like the real people and there were some technical imperfections". Now, since this was the best I had seen, I was almost offended and I counter "What? What do you mean by that? And, how do you know there were "technical imperfections"?

He says "Well, I was there".

It turns out he was in Huston at NASA and I think he was in charge of the electrical portion of the Moon Lander and Command module. He never said so, but I think he was the guy who came up with the idea for reversing the flow of electricity which allowed them enough energy to power up the command module again.

He showed me a Presidential citation and a NASA Commendation for the work they all did while there during the emergency!

That's why the movie is so significant to me. But, there are so many good movies to choose from, it's impossible to select "the best".

I don't watch tv either so you can imagine the video collection I've amassed. It would help to know the genre/category you prefer in order to make 'good' recommendations.

The best movie ever. That's easy. I talked about it in another forum. It is Vertigo, and not the contemptable Citizen Kane.

You would recognize him anywhere. His head is egg shaped and he wears a pocket protector.

Actually I'm not referring to any certain category or age of movie. I enjoy different kinds but I have noticed I prefer original versions over new remakes. It doesn't have to be the best movie you've seen, just compare 2 movies you've liked and pick the best one out of the two. At work we're having this discussion over emails, but most of the ppl I work with are very young and switched the topic to TV shows, well, I don't have cable or satellite and I don't plan on getting either anytime soon. But movies, I can look for on Netflix, Redbox and there's even a video store around the corner that surprisingly is doing quite good. I like to visit them but its usually my kids that rent movies from them. Plus, I've always liked hearing thoughts on movies, sometimes you learn something new from that even if you watched it.

Two good , somewhat related, movies were "Full Metal Jacket" and "Platoon".

I found Full Metal Jacket to be a very accurate portrayal of Marine Corps Recruit Training boot camp without the violence (if you can get past the suicide). I found it hysterical and brings back a lot of memories. The Drill Instructor in the movie was actually there when I went through... a friend of mine had him as a real drill instructor. I was never in the cities (that was supposed to be Hue, after Tet, I believe) so can't attest to it. I do know that Hue was nasty though.

I found Platoon to be an accurate portrayal of grunts in the bush and a typical tour. The death of the guy running through the jungle, at the end, and getting shot a thousand times and still getting up again, was a "little over the top", but the rest was really pretty good.

I liked "Apocalypse", especially the scenes at the base with the USO show and the scenes at the bridge where nobody was in charge. That was actually somewhat realistic. I loved Duval walking along the beach while the mortars are going off all around. I don't remember seeing that happen! Never did see the Air Cav.

If you are a stooges fan, rent the new Three Stooges movie. You will laugh.

Fortunately, I married a woman who likes the Stooges. I had to look long and hard.
