Harvard Law: Gun control is useless and harmful
I posted this in one of the gun control threads before and it was totally ignored. I don't know if people can't read or if they can't focus for 50 pages or maybe they don't know what Harvard Law School is or I don't really know. But nevertheless, it's time to post it again.

Harvard Law School is Barack Obama's alma mater. Not only have they concluded that gun control would not work in this country, they have demonstrated that a lack of firearms causes murder rates to go UP, not down. They provide statistics that clearly show countries with high amounts of firearms have the lowest murder rates in the world. The fifty or so page report:

Considering the authors of this study, the fact that Harvard University is one of the most liberal institutions in the country located in the most liberal state in the country, I think it's safe to say that the gun control debate is over.

As I said this study is disputed and is not considered definitive by any means. Publishing a study does not imply endorsement or agreement. Publishing simply allows wider
peer review. So no it isn't settled at all.

Nearly 1,000 Ohio Educators Apply for Firearms Training
Not to take away or change the subject of this thread, but this is kind of an additional bit of info: Looks like teachers want guns and gun training.
**********************************************************************

Should teachers and school administrators be armed?

In the wake of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the question of allowing teachers and school administrators to carry concealed weapons at school has been a hot topic of debate. But while the nation debates the issue, teachers and administrators in some states are taking action.

Federal law states that a person must have a concealed carry permit in order to be in possession of a firearm on school property. But states have different laws. Ohio’s laws also require a concealed carry permit PLUS the approval of the local school board in order to possess a weapon on school property.

Knowing the Ohio laws, Buckeye Firearms Foundation has offered free attendance to educators to their Armed Teacher Training Program which will provide educators with the necessary information to help them obtain a conceal carry permit. The cost of the program is $1000 which covers room, board, ammunition and other materials supplied during the course. Since they are a non-profit organization manned by volunteers, it helps keep the cost down.

They are covering the costs of the course with monies they have raised and donations from other sponsors.

Buckeye Firearms Foundation only has room for 24 openings in the program. By January 2, they had over 650 applicants and I just heard on the local news that the number of applicants has climbed to over 900 and more are coming in every day. Nearly 20% of the applicants are from principals and vice principals.

So while politicians, both liberal and conservative wage their debate on the ethics and the practicality of allowing firearms in schools or banning them from every American, teachers are clamoring for firearm training and concealed carry permits. Perhaps those are the people we need to be listening to.

The authors themselves admit this is not pure science and some items could be open to interpretation. But, the statistics are so staggeringly in favor of the general conclusion that any reasonable person would have to agree.

Why not read it and give us your conclusions?

Softaire thanks but I have read the criticism of the study before and its flaws and I find that compelling rather than the study. This is an emotion based area of disagreement and it will boil down to how much political clout each side can generate. This study is totally biased and settles nothing. All I want to see is public rejections of the right wing claim that military style
weapons are a right because they might be useful against the government. Polls show large majorities agree that these weapons need more restrictions not less.

As I said above this study is disputed and is not considered definitive by any means. Again, tat, publishing a study does not imply endorsement or agreement by Harvard University. Publishing in this publication simply allows wider peer review. The authors of this study were openly biased and many flaws have been noted. So again, no it isn't settled at all based on this study.

The real issue here is the validity of the idea that we must accept higher gun deaths in the USA because the alternative is tyranny if people don't have the military firepower to wage war against the government, and that any reasonable attempt to restrict access to guns will result in disarming the population. The rest including this study is smoke and mirrors. That paranoia is what prevents us from the kind of extensive background screening and registration of firearms as well as ammunition and combat gear restrictions that would deter mass killing incidents. In reality the matter is settled because gun death rates do go up when there is wide gun availability and limited screening on who has access to guns and ammo, and down when reasonable restrictions are in place, and western democracies are not being taken over by tyrants simply because citizens do not have military style weapons in their homes. Polls show most people here consider self defense, hunting and target practice as the only reasonable uses of guns and are willing to tolerate a slightly higher gun death rate to preserve that right to keep arms, but want real restrictions on who has access to guns to prevent mass shootings. Outright bans and confiscation of all personal firearms are simply a scare tactic used by the gun advocates to prevent any sane regulation of guns.

Gun Control NOT useless
Is anybody here aware that the DHS has purchased MILLIONS of rounds of hollow point ammunition and almost every federal department has hundreds of thousands of rounds each. Why does the Dept.of Education need ammunition?

Does anyone realize that the brass from spent rounds (from military shooting ranges) that used to be sent to civilian factories to reuse and make ammunition for civilian guns, has been stopped.

Does anyone remember BO (as a candidate) saying that we couldn't rely on the military only for our defense needs, that we needed a civilian defense corps. Except, I think this civilian defense corps is meant to protect the government, rather than the people, and will be supplied by the government.

Now, if you should couple those facts with the rumors that BO will confiscate, or severely limit guns and ammunition to the civilian market, you might get a"queasy" feeling in the stomach about what is being planned.

Could this be a possibility?

The right wing plot to accumulate enough firepower to threaten the elected government is something many are mindful of. We are NOT going to let you get that kind of firepower which also enables mass killers.

I think the diabolical right-wing plot to arm the populous is working. Over 16 million new firearms have peen purchased in 2012 alone. That's not acceptable, who do they think they are? Somebody should do something about that and put a stop to it. Maybe make an example out of a few to show rest who's in charge.

Who is this "we" that you keep mentioning?

He's referring to the other communist doucheparade's who will help him build walls and confiscate weapons. Later maestro will help construct a prison camp for people who don't comply.
