Gov’t Destroys 1,600 Pounds of Deer Meat Donated to Homeless Shelter
Hunters and homeless people in Louisiana are righteously outraged after state health officials forced a homeless shelter to throw out nearly a ton of perfectly good venison. The meat that had been donated to the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission could have fed more than 3,000 people. Instead, it was tossed in trash bins by officials from the Department of Health and Hospitals who say that state law prohibits the serving of venison in homeless shelters. Not only did the officials toss the meat, they doused it with Clorox to make sure it couldn’t be eaten by animals or, presumably, people. “Deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment in Louisiana,” an official told Fox News in an email. “While we applaud the good intentions of the hunters who donated this meat, we must protect the people who eat at the Rescue Mission, and we cannot allow a potentially serious health threat to endanger the public.” Richard Campbell, co-founder of Hunters for the Hungry, a charitable group that donates wild game to shelters, said hunters across the state and in Mississippi are outraged about the statement and the waste. The state’s health Gestapo got involved after someone at the shelter complained about being fed deer meat, a staple in many countries across the globe and considered by most people to be a treat or a delicacy. godfatherpolitics.com

That's such an insult to the civic minded and a criminal disservice to the needy and hungry by the self important busybody wannabe lords over all. Their smug arguments are contrived and well practiced. In Washington, donated game meat was used for many decades to feed jailed inmates, the homeless and the hungry. I've never heard of a single case of bad or spoiled meat being served. It's good enough for my table but not for a soup kitchen? I far prefer tasty venison over beef. No chemicals added to the meat or fed to the animals (all natural), no abuse to the animal during it's life and they are almost always killed as humanly, quickly and cleanly as possible (unlike many a slaughterhouse).

... when I lived in Montana, I worked with the homeless ... game meat (usually elk or deer) was a common staple, especially in the fall. I don't understand the Louisiana bureaucrat's position ... perhaps he was enforcing some stupid law on the books.

HAHAHA
Once again our laws protect us, even if we starve! Chickens can get bird flu, cows get mad cow disease, hogs continually get infected with different kinds of cancers (not saying it can harm us but its really gross if you have ever seen it) Deer do get diseases, then they either die or are killed by predators. Not saying its impossible but I dont know of any cases of health issues from deer. I have a freezer full of deer meat right now. Probably over 100lbs of deer in my freezer.

I have an old Louisiana cookbook that includes recipes for squirrels, turtles, raccoons and other things otherwise known as road kill. You'd think venison would be thought of as more of a luxury item. Guess the saying "beggars can't be choosers" is outdated.

Squirrel is a big food item here. I have never eaten it myself but I have eaten turtle and coon. Turtle is actually better than coon to me. Also, while its not that unusual frog legs is one of my favorite foods.

I've eaten most everything that a human can, but squirrels are still semi-cute rats that climb.

I've eaten many things. At this point I don't even ask. It's always better if I don't know.

If you ever get over here I'll treat you to some of the local stuff. Kangarooo...bit like venison; Croccodile....bit of a cross between fish and chicken; Camel....rubber tyres (might have just been the way it was cooked on the day)
