The rise and fall of Empires
I came across this link a few years ago and it's always stuck with me. Living in the part of the world I do, it's interesting to think what a similar visualization would look in say a couple of hundred years time....just as well I like Chinese food vimeo.com

... wow! I thought that moving graphic was quite interesting. My mental history kept flowing with the expansion and contraction of empires ... although my mental acuity couldn't keep up with actual events. Good post. As it came to its logical conclusion, I began thinking about how the definition of "empire" has been changing. Two centuries ago, it was about land and ultimately the resources and trade that the physical land represented to the empire in control. This has evolved from physical land to influence ... it's no longer necessary to "set up shop" the same way in other places. If the same depiction were to be created but we used military bases plus the proliferation of various corporations, different geographic charts would evolve. It would be interesting to look at other charts using different modalities such as military or corporate influence/impact. Again, I found that moving graphic quite engaging.

It was very visually interesting. I'd like to see the same thing for the world history from the Persian Empire, Greek & Romans, Mongols, Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, American, Russian (Soviet Union) etc... Now that would be really interesting... probably a big project though.
