White declares her intentions! If white wants to give himself the best chance to win then it is this line. White plays what I call the flick-knife attack. This Bb5+ is suppose to be uncomfortable for black but I actually think it hinders white more that black. I chose the main line with 8...Nfd7 because I believe that 7.f4 and 8.Bb5+ are nothing more than fear mongering. Just watch how I send the LSB back to his home with her tail between her legs. I hope white is in for a fight because I have no intention of just sitting back and let her come at me. From move 8 on I intend to wrestle the initiative away from her and keep for the rest of the game. |

Taimanov variationbrigadecommander has chosen the Taimanov variation of the Modern Benoni. In the period 1950 to now (and with quite a broad database) it has been won by white in 49% of the cases, by black in 28%. Also, a (so far) cursory look at the position gives me the same impression, i.e. it will be a hard task for black to win this one. Of course, elyhim is more highly rated by ~100 points, which might balance the outcome. Nevertheless, my money is on white. If black wins I will lift my hat in admiration At any rate, this will be a very interesting game that I highly recommend for everyone in our Club to follow, and also to comment upon. |

Now what! Both sides are equally developed but black is closer to playing his b7-b5 than white is in playing her e4-e5. So the idea of Bb5+ has IMO has failed. Now white will have to now have waste a tempo to regroup. So why did I choose 11...Nc7. Well 11...Nb4 which is favored by engines does nothing to help achieve the important b7-b5 break. And 11...a6?! is punished by 12.Bxd7+! Bxd7 13. f5! Kasparov-Nunn, Lucerne Olympiad 1982 |

All this has been happening...The Modern Benoni has long been one of my favorite openings, heavily influenced by the likes of GMM Mikhail Tal and David Bronstein. Unfortunately, my theory is way out of date. However I did complete a game as Black a few weeks ago: game

Tit for TatThere are tactics all over the board. In correspondence chess this not much of a problem but over the board or blitz it's a nightmare. |
