7th move...
I've always been partial to the exchange variation and the minority attack as White in the QGD-Orthodox, so I recommend 7 PxQP. [I'm not sure how to render this in the other notation... I think 7 cxd5]

Bd3
I guess after we went a4 instead of a3, we conceded b4 to black. I'll go along with Bd3 to move towards castling and starting an attack on the kingside, while allowing black to attack on the queenside.

I think I like cxd5 also. Perhaps we can isolate a pawn with the following.
7. cxd5 exd5
8. dxc5 Bxc5.

Note: There is only one move left in book according to the World gameknot.com database. That being Be2

Next suggestion
Let's continue breaking apart the Black pawns with 8 PxP [I think that's 8 dxc5 in algebraic]

I agree. Let's continue with our plan.

I like Be2 for our next move. It prepares for the castle, guards against black's pin on our knight.
1. Be2 Bg4

If we move Bd3 then we have our Queen doing double duty defending both the bishop and knight.

1. Bd3 Nb4
2. Qe2 Bg4

Stalhandske has castled. Safely tucking away his King we now have the opportunity to engage in trench warfare. A castle surely is a good safe developing move here for us. However we should consider the isolated pawn as a target and perhaps establish some pressure on it.

We should castle, too
I recommend 10 O-O. Always best to get your King safe before engaging in complications.

solascriptura suggested attack on the isolated pawn
Here are some spontaneous comments kindly sent to me about this by elyhim. Important principles!

Attacking isolated pawn how-to

Step #1 Control the square immediately in front of it. This prevents your opponent from using it as a weapon in the future. Classic ways of doing this is putting a knight in front of the pawn.
Step #2 Attack and remove the support pieces guarding the pawn
Step#3 Capture the pawn by pointing every piece you have on it.

General tips on Isolated pawns:
- isolated pawns are mostly an endgame weakness. So the first priority is to content the pawn and then attack it when there are very few pieces on the board.

Again the consensus is a Castle, so I have made our move for us.

Re: stalhandske

Interesting. In this case the isolated pawn we will put on the back burner and do as you suggest figure out how to stop any advancement of it. The information is very useful, thanks I will keep it in mind. I have some other games where I want to target an isolated pawn.

isolated pawn
yeah, the isolated pawn problem was not meant to be restricted to this match, but was a very interesting proposal from elyhim to be added to our teaching concept
solascriptura
10-Mar-13, 04:33

I am not quite sure, but somehow, white has lost control of the center. Black has all of its minor pieces into position and I think ready to start a thrust with the isolated pawn. It is interesting to say the least.

I will vote 11. b3. This will prepare the path for our bishop to c2 or a4. It is the best way I can think of dealing with the vulnerable b4 square.

If Black elects to push with the isolated pawn, we still remain solid with b3

11. b3 d4
12. exd4 Nxd4
13. Nxd4 Bxd4
14. Bb2

My vote is also for 11 P-QN3 [b3].

Our position does not seem to lend itself to other options.

11.b3?
Hello guys I do not wish to impose on your game but I will like to add a comment on 11.b3?

The instructive idea is that if you have pieces that can be developed or piece positions that can be improved play those before playing pawns. Only move pawns in the endgame or if they are directly hindering the development of your pieces.

For example: 11.Nd4 Qd6 12.Nxe6 fxe6 13. Bd2 is an example of how to play to improve your pieces
