Group G
Stalhandske – 2145 – Group G

1. frapazzo - 1362
2. solascriptura - 1361
3. last_archimedean - 1352
4. thebishop1000 - 1296

I think it would be interesting of the four of us challenged Stalhandske to a match.

We could discuss the moves and why we think it would be good or bad. Our team ♗Yeshua's ♔ Warriors♗ has been playing the Knights of the 65thsquare in just this type of match and it has been very helpful and a great learning experience. game

It will require all 4 of us putting our heads together, so it is not one of those bench warmer type of things.

Anyway, just a thought.
Blessings,
Len

Group G game against mentor
I welcome solascriptura's suggestion & I am ready to play such a game. I suggest that we play with "open cards" such that comments can be made on both sides throughout. The game must be unrated, of course, and I suggest that the four of you play white and that there is may be 5 days per move.

RE: stalhandske

Thanks for offering your time, you are most kind.

I will contact the others and let them know and see if there is interest. I will challenge as you suggest playing white. If you don't mind I would like to use a 7 day limit as I travel extensively and am without internet access.

Blessings,
Len

A 7-day limit per move
is fine with me & will give better time to you to confer about and discuss the next move. I suggest that you will take the lead, i.e. that you will actually MAKE the move when you've reached consensus

Walking the Walk and Learning to Run Group G Consultation Match

Here is the game link
Simply vote or post any analysis to this thread.

The current board position

You can simply hover over the board and click the mouse to analyze the position. We will consider our position, vote on what we think is the best move and I will move for us. We have 7 days, so please offer your analysis early because our most worthy opponent will be a tough nut to crack!

Since this is the first move I vote d4 as I like the Queens Pawn Opening.

OK, I'm in...
I don't mind 1 P-Q4 as the first move. So, seconded.
stalhandske

@the last Archimedes :)
Whilst I do appreciate old traditions, we should make this effort as clear as possible to our fellow Club members. So, please at least "translate" your annotation principle to the one understood by the vast majority here. E.g. 1. P-Q4 (means 1. Queen's pawn to square 4, i.e. 1. d4).

Now, that was not criticism - just an appeal....

RE: just an appeal.
LOL, huh...good point. I have been making the moves for our consultation match against the Knights of the 65th Square and have found it difficult from time to time to figure out what folks mean.

I will try
I find algebraic notation ridiculously confusing, but I will do my best. I will include the proper notation first, and if there's a discrepancy, assume I meant the move in the proper notation. For instance, if I write "I think we should play 1 P-Q4 (1 e4)" I mean to suggest P-Q4, not P-K4. I hope this issue won't come up, as I hope to correctly translate all my suggestions from proper notation into the confusing algebraic stuff and avoid there BEING any discrepancies.

Anyway, I have no problem with 1 P-Q4 (1 d4).

i use both
Algebraic and the old method. Most of the Chess books i have are in the old notation (left to me by my Dad). At first it was confusing but after a while you learn both and there is no problem. Like learning another language, hard at first but it becomes second nature.
stalhandske
08-Feb-13, 05:31

both systems are fine, in principle....
....and I also learned the "descriptive" notation first. It is true that this is like learning two different languages - in this case the logic behind the two is actually quite different. The two languages are (almost) unrelated. However, at the end of the day we are dealing with the current situation where (to my knowledge) every book on chess uses the "algebraic" notation. I.e. it has been universally accepted! (see: en.wikipedia.org). I won't say whether "algebraic" is better or worse, only that it is NOW the accepted notation! Therefore, we will stick to it here (also to make sure that all our young Members can follow). So the descriptive notation is OK only when acompanied by the algebraic equivalent.
last_archimedean
08-Feb-13, 07:42

To [hopefully] put a cap on this
*Every* chess book I own is in proper notation. None of them use that algebraic stuff.

But I'm pretty sure I can manage to put the algebraic next to the proper notation without making a mistake, as long as I focus.

Now, on with the game!

Ok, I will give Jerry (thebishop1000) another day. I sent a message yesterday. I checked, he was on early and didn't vote here, so if he doesn't vote I will make our first move for us.

Since the GameKnot PGN editor uses the Algebraic notation I will usually post it as I can simply block copy to this editor. Shouldn't be tough either way.

Here is the game
Current position. Remeber you can analyze the postion simply by hovering over the board graphic and then clicking your mouse button.

There are three possibilities according to the GameKnot data base. The most popular c4 is the one I prefer. The other two are Nf5 or Bf4.

I like and vote for c4 because it challenges the middle and makes black react and decide to accept the Gambit or not. The top three responses for black all favor white, they are e6, c6 and dxc4.
last_archimedean
09-Feb-13, 09:08

Only one thing to do here
One Black responds with the identical move, thus keeping the game on Classical lines, one move is by far the best:

2 P-QB4 [2 c4.]

I not only like it, I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming and protesting furiously if someone wanted a different move. Seconded.

Gentlemen....
As my profile page shows, I will have to take a formal break due to a 2 week vacation. It is unlikely that I will be able to make moves during this time (from incoming Monday until 26th March). I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience!

We seem to have a classical game in front of us, and if you decide in favour of 2. "pawn to queen bishop 4" (or simply, 2. c4), you may expect your opponent to seriously consider 2...e6

RE:Gentlemen....

Since we can assume the reply will be e6 by stalhandske I suggest and more than likely vote for 3. Nc3.

With the Nc3 move we will force the issue in the center. Black will have to challenge or be pushed out of the center.

Assuming ...
... that stalhandske plays the QGD-Orthodox [2... P-K3 or 2 e6] I second the vote for 3 N-QB3 [3 Nc3].

This is the second move in the Queen's gambit declined (D30) (gameknot.com)

As previously discussed both Sean (last_archimedean) and I like Nc3. We will wait to see if Jerry (thebishop1000 ) has a different choice.

You have a newcomer to your Group!
Hi everyone!

As neither Torsten nor I have not heard from Frapazzo for a long time and he has allowed his premium membership to drop, this denotes that perhaps Frapazzo would benefit from a little spell in my Casual Group K. If he does get in touch again at a later date I will review the matter but he will end up with a different mentor if this becomes the case.

Part of this decision has been prompted by the fact that we have a very keen and enthusiastic new member whose rating and temperament is just right for this group. He will therefore take Frapazzo's place in this group.

Here is your New Member:-

gameknot.com

Baumannjoe (Joe) is finding his feet and is currently playing TheBishop1000 (Jerry) at the moment so it will be interesting to see how he shapes up against him. I will be also interested to see how your Queen's Gambit Declined Orthodox Defense pans out!

Kind regards

Joanne

4 e3
I must have to apologize to the group as I inadvertently made a move in our consultation match. I moved e3 which is still in book, but the concept of the match is to review the and discuss the moves, and then as a group vote.

Two things we can do is continue from this position we can cancel and start over.

Again apologies to the group. Please let me know if you wish to continue or start overf.

Blessings and thanks,
Len
