Welcome Mini-Tournaments Parts 4 and 5Thank You! Thanks for replying Mrs.Stevens! Here is the Annotation vs. myevilluck gameknot.com xxxxxxx sanjay2000: Here is my Annotation vs. chrisforbes21 gameknot.com xxxxxxx game anotation ptitroque vs theanalogkid gameknot.com theanalogkid: Game annotation pititrougr vs theanalogkid I have added my comments to pititrouges annotation of our first game. It is not very technical, more of a how I was thinking rather than the specific variations. Typically, the few games I annotated in the past on gameknot were completed in real time, as I moved. This was an "after the fact" commentary, based on memory of what was going on in my head during the game. Comments, thoughts, and suggestions (constructive) are welcomed. A. G. Ptitroque vs theanalogkid gameknot.com A wild game. I have questions about some moves (noted in the anotations) Thanks for the answers. Other comments welcome, of course theanalogkid: I added a few comments to the above game annotation. A very interesting game in my humble opinion. I felt cramped most of the game, however I am cool with that, to an extent, as I used to play classical dragon a lot, years ago. Good game. I enjoyed it pitrogue. Well up until my queen left the board. theanalogkid: My apologies, I believe I meant to reference Caro-Kann defense, rather than the dragon, a being a primarily cramped game for a relatively good while. I have not opened an opening book (or any other chess book for that matter) in a very long time, and my memory fails me. xxxxxxx billdancourtney: Loss against kmccrate541. Not a good annotation, sorry. gameknot.com xxxxxxxx billdancourtney: Another loss to kmccrate541 Is this the end of this MT? I see no new annotations. I hope it is over, really hate this opening gameknot.com |

myevilluck (2253) 1 vs. kmccrate541 (1625) 0kmccrate541: Game vs. myevilluck Hi all... This is my first completed club game and my first shot at posting an annotation of the game. Hope this works.. It was pretty one sided although I felt like I was doing decent up until about move 15... gameknot.com |

First Result...Rather than ask my opponent to annotate this one - a task probably not to his taste - I'll do it here: Mini-Tournament Group I Invitational: White: ionadowman Black: kmccrate541 1.e4 e6 The French Defence has long been a favorite of mine, though I have to admit my GK record against really strong opposition has been pretty dismal so far... All the sameot a bad choice by Black here. 2.d4 Nf6!? Now this is a very unusual second move by Black. Most common is 2...d5, challenging in the centre, whereat White plays one of 3.Nc3 (Main? Line); 3.Nd2 (Tarrasch); or 3.e5 (Advance; a favorite of A. Nimzovitch). This knight development can lead to something akin to the Alekhine Defence (1.e4 Nf6). 3.e5 ... Deciding to test Black's idea. 3...Nd5 This looks safer than 3...Ne4. 4.c4 ... I did consider playing 4.Nc3 here, inducing 4...Nxc3 5.bxc3 to build for White a powerful reinforced centre. But I changed my mind and went for something more akin to the standard 'Alekhine Defence' lines. 4...Nb6 5.Nc3 Bb5 Developing and pinning the knight. What happens now is more familiarly known from the Winawer line in the French Defence (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4) 6.Qg4! ... Black's dark square bishop having left the K-side, White Queen at once probes the vulnerable g7-square. Castling is not an option (6...0-0, 7.Bh6), so how else is Black to protect that square? 6... g6?! Risky, in my view. Why? The g7-square is no longer under direct attack, but at the cost to Black of serious weakness around the dark squares. This will have dire consequences later on. At it happens White has a latent threat lurking in the background of the coming play... 7.c5!? ... Probably White could have profited by 7.Bg5 Be7 8.Bxe7 Qxe7 9.0-0-0 but I try for something more. Whether I deserved to get more is the question! 7... Nd5 Also playable was 7...Bxc3ch here. When playing the bishop out to b4 in this way, Black has pretty much already to have decided what he will do when it gets hit by a3. This goes for just about any bishop-knight pin of this type. 8.a3 ... The threat is a kind of Noah's Ark Trap by b2-b4 to come. But that will require a couple of moves' preparation as the c3-Knight needs continued protection. So after 8...Ba5, I was looking at 9.Bd2 or, more likely (to keep the bishop free for other duty), 9.Ne2. But Black obviates that threat altogether. 8... Bxc3ch 9.bxc3 ... b 9... Nxc3?? A terrible oversight, possibly misled by the apparent lack of anything happening on the open dark squares on the K-side. The knight absolutely had to stay on d5, but in the face of White's threat to drive him from there by 10.c4, what was Black to do? He needed a further protection of the deadly h4-d8 diagonal, and needed it at once. How? Not 9...f6 10.c4 Ne7 11.exf6 Ng8 12.f7ch; and castling would not have been much better: 9...0-0 10.Bh6 Re8 11.c4 Ne7 12.Nf3 and Black is left with a cramped and uncomfortable defence, by the look of things. Best for Black would have been 9...Nc6! 10.c4 Ne7 with at least a fightable game. 10.Bg5 ... About as drastic a demonstration as you are likely to see of the risk involved in incurring colour-complex weaknesses. Such weaknesses aren't always fatal, but they are always something to beware of. 10...Qxg5 There was nothing else to do, aside from resignation. 11.Qxg5 Nc6 12.Nf3 Ne4 Rather risky, as after 13.Qe3 the knight has no retreat available. But I opted for a slightly different Q-move hoping to induce the knight to go back to c3, gaining me a tempo. 13.Qf4 d5 This would have been the likely response to 13.Qe3 as well. 14.cxd6 e.p. f5 It was so tempting to play 15.exf5 e.p. here, but I couldn't make up my mind what to play after 15...Nxd6. 15.dxc7 ... Simplest. Black resigned at this point. Well: I wish kmccrate541 better luck with the White pieces! |

Anyway, how do I access the board with the annotations? Thanks! |

Annotations...But I will say this: the moment Black played 6...g6, the idea of Bg5 to strike at the Queen became part of my thinking for each of the next few moves. Hence the drive to displace the Knight from d5. That it worked out so well was luck, nothing more. If members would like this annotation transferred to the 'Annotated Games' file, let me know. Cheers, Ion |

Another one for you, Ion!I have just annotated a Sicilian Naijdorf game between me and your Walker, Small-potato. Both sides attack each other's kings, but unfortunately for black he came off worse! Here is how the game went: jstevens1 1 v small-potato 0 gameknot.com I hope you all have a good read. Bye for now. Joanne |

Another MT Result...gameknot.com Meanwhile, sanjay2000 timed out his first game against me, but had hung in there long enough to make the game worth annotating. Black was busted pretty much when he ran short of time. The annotation will follow shortly. |

commentsOn another note, sanjay timed out on our second game, and had apparently been removed from the tourney. |

Pity...The pity of it is that in a 5-player tourney, each competitor accounts for (their half of) 40% of the games. The only one that went beyond the opening was my one game with him. The other never got started, even. Forty percent of games is a sizeable chunk that we can't really evaluate. Well, that's enough said about that. If sanjay2000 still wants to stay with this group, that's fine, but please let us know your status and the extent to which you will be able to participate. If you feel that you want to quit, please let us know that, too. This Mini-Tournament was as much to establish areas that we can look to polishing up, or improving. So far the big thing seems to be consistency: short range errors spoiling many a promising game. It's not easy to think of a 'mentoring' way to improve that. It tends to be something that time and plenty of play will tend towards eradicating. |
