... Iran would not dare to use even one nuke ... their own population and heritage would be wiped out. They do want some respect, I s'pose ... they have a large population and heritage that has been trivialized by the West and 'second bested' by Arabic countries. They believe they have earned [historically] a seat at the global table.

that seems correct chaz
and i would agree. But the regime is somewhat unstable. They simply cannot be allowed to have Nukes. They supply with arms and training radical Islamic Groups. I don't want to wake up some day hearing a low rumble coming from the direction of NYC. If they give up their Nukes, and we can verify this, they will have their seat at the table, and be excepted back into the community of Nations. For they are an Ancient an proud people and deserve the utmost respect. Remember they are also beset with a virulent right-wing ideology both religious and ignorant, even more then we are here. We don't have the righteous portfolio anymore after the illegal and tragic Iraq War.

... true but we have not earned their trust, nor have we tried all that hard to do so. After all, we have more muscle than poise in the region ... and oil has colored our otherwise altruistic vision. We need SOMEthing to give to them so they don't have to lose face.

This has always been my take
on these type of countries having nukes. I don't think anyone needs nukes however we all know that now that they exist someone will have them. The difference in many countries having them and Iran or N. Korea is that the few have the power. Especially a country like N. Korea. It doesn't take an act of congress or some sort of majority vote. It simply takes a nut waking up in a bad mood. In N. Korea people were punished if they didn't look sad enough or cry enough when Kim Jong-il died. Chaz I think what you say sounds good but I'm not convinced they think that way. I think hatred for the Jews and the west would take precedence over protecting their heritage. Its the mind of a suicide bomber. I could just be looking at worst case scenario but I would rather play it safe and be wrong when it comes to Nukes.

Stinky ...
... yes, their attitudes toward Israel is a valid point, but it's not necessarily the mind of a suicide bomber. Many nations in the Middle East are, however, jealous of what the West has achieved.

Up in the air
Both US and Iran denied that there are plans for such a negotiation only between the two. I don't believe the problem will be resolved by direct negotiating between the US and Iran only without involving UN and or international community. When US tried to appease N. Korea, look at what happened eventually. N. Korea exploded the nuke. Did the US not learn the lesson when Bush invaded Iraq without much help from western nations?
