... racism is deplorable, we all agree. Sometimes it's convenient to use the term just because the concept is deplorable ... there is a quite natural tendency [historically, biologically, anthropologically] to mistrust anyone not family or who could not [easily] be family; and, many just will not trust others until they can. We enlarge family to community over time.

Politics is about power and who gets to call the shots ... who gets to control the evolution of the community or state.

Isn't it quite understandable that we would inevitably overlap these concepts all depending upon how we view the World? As we become more educated, as we mature culturally, as we adapt to everchanging circumstances, we also embrace a greater inclusion of humanity. It really is a natural process.

I looked at an election map and I realized,

there are only about 8 or 9 counties in Arizona. There are counties in Arizona that are bigger than many states.

Is there a reason for that?

Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

See, now I'm thinking, maybe it means the WHITE MAN is evil man, and all of the oppressed peoples is the world is the righteous man, and LIBERALS are shepherds protecting the weak in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean THE WHITE MAN is the righteous man and GOD is the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that ain't the truth. The truth is, AUSTRALIA is stupid, and THEY are the tyranny of evil men. But I'm trying, AUSTRALIA. I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Illi ...
... having grown up in the Southwest (New Mexico), that's a question I once had myself. What I came to understand about Arizona's county lines is that many were 'drawn' due to Indian reservation lines over a hundred years ago. Coupling that with large desert expanses and a very small population at the time, smaller counties (like in the East) were just impractical. In N.Mex., there are 33 counties for very similar reasons. Another factor was the size of towns to serve an area ... before 1900 there were fewer towns in AZ that could legitimately house any sort of government ... in NM there were a few more, especially along the Rio Grande valley; thus a few more counties. There are prob'ly a couple more reasons too that I don't know.

Very eloquent, and deeply insightful.

Much to think about -- thank you for posting this.

These voting trends mimic the past fellas.
Repus have attracted white males and crazies for decades and the Democs typically find great following among minorities and women.

I'm afraid your all being taken by media hype if you think this is the first or second time it's happened at these percentage ratios.

Traditionally in the USA as various minority populations get equitable levels of prosperity the ratio of conservatives becomes greater. But having been through this cycle before many times, my point is we can understand history don't have to make it so hard. We should be looking at why the gender and racial gaps exist and how to bridge them, not justifying the problems with laws that produce disparate results and how this is just politics as usual. Women and minorities still have not received full equality and their interests are still not given an equal place at the table. Overt racism and sexism is not acceptable among white males anymore either. The remaining big issue in the Diversity field where I do some work is cultural bias, the assumption that others have to adapt my perspectives rather than working towards a mutual understanding that exceeds what any one population can do. We see that bias in the assumption that "others" are just motivated by handouts and government taking care of them or not living the way "we" think they should.

Either we want a representative government or we don't. If we do, we can't just say it is all politics as usual.

We simply can't live with "politics as usual".
Politicians have an appearance of looking at results that grew from historical actions and deciding that the action was all good or all bad, instead of dissecting it to find elements that might be worthy of re-considering or finding parts that proved to be miss-guided for the purpose of building a greater America for it's citizens and the World.

Anybody who considers policies and ideals like Reaganomics, religion, Communism, Capitalism, civil rights/head start, or socialism to be all bad or all good is either muddied with dogma-doo or dis-interested in the truth.

How did you like my "dogma-doo"?

I always try and remember Thesis---antithesis---synthesis. Absolute dogmas are suspect and exploitable. Excellent point jan.
