I have to think you agree with that statement since you posted it. Under certain, specific situations or conditions you might be right... it may be correctly applied... like to the corrupt corporate executive who steals the pension fund etc. However, for the most part, I disagree with the denigrating of the "success" motive.

Most people want to be "successful". Earning a "good" income and providing for their family would be considered "successful". Doing what it takes to be successful would be what makes most people happy. Of course, being "successful" also means balancing the drive for money & things with spending time with the family, taking a leadership role in the kids lives, living a quality life, experiencing life, and doing what is enjoyable etc.

I guess I'm objecting to the statement that implies EVERYBODY is doing whatever it takes to grab as much cash and benefits as possible by using immoral business practices, backstabbing in the workplace, lying, cheating etc. and that the only interpretation of "success" is that it is a big cash grab.

While that is certainly true is some cases, I do not believe it is a "national disease". I think it is more a disease of politicians and some top executives but certainly not of most people in general. Most people are happy enough to be able to pay their bills and go see a movie once in a while. And, being successful means to them that they will try hard to advance in their careers, earn more money enabling them to provide more for themselves and their families, live in a better neighborhood, go to college .... I see nothing wrong in that.

first of all, assuming i agree with a quote i post is not correct. in this case, i think he says a couple of things that make his meaning clear. the word, in the 1st sentence, 'exclusive' is very important. it implies that he is not so much against a cash economy, as he is against placing the 'bitch goddess success' on an altar when , as the second sentence makes clear, one places 'cash interpretations' on the idea of success.

you need to see both sentences together to get his meaning. nor does he accuse all of succumbing to the disease. i am sure, at the root, based on your statements, that you actually agree with him. placing the attainment of success, when defined as wealth, is disastrous to a society, and we are leaning heavily in that direction.

by the way, this was written in 1906.

I agree with all you say there; however, it was "our national disease" that made me interpret it as meaning "all of us".

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

Seriously
But don't worry daley, they are going to keep making the salad dressing. His olive oil and vinegar dressing is the second best dressing I've ever had. It was first for a long time until I tried the greek salad at the Olive Tree in Honolulu. If you ever come to Honolulu, you MUST go to the Olive Tree.

It's not too far from Ala Moana
but it's closer to Kahala. I love that place. I've already mentioned they have the best Greek salad in the United States (I haven't been to Greece yet), but they also have great lamb and fish souvlaki, the falafel is delicious, excellent hummus and pita...I'm getting hungry.

"I only ate it because I was hungry."

My friend Amy at the Big Chill Festival after I gave her a skunk cake on the Sunday night. It's about all she said that night. The previous three nights, she was drunk, and a demon. She was proper chilled that last night. This comment was followed by around 5 minutes of laughter, before hunger kicked in again and we all went looking for burgers. Festivals are great.
