quotes thread II
A democracy which makes or even effectively prepares for modern, scientific war must necessarily cease to be democratic. No country can be really well prepared for modern war unless it is governed by a tyrant, at the head of a highly trained and perfectly obedient bureaucracy. ~ Aldous Huxley

Democracy has many meanings. Countries today are complex so are the amazing varieties of modern war. What do you mean by tyrant and how much information can he have? Highly trained burauracy? Trained in what. How to run a bureauracy. How to run a military operation and what type where? What of diverse countries. What if say ambassador disagree with chief general. Who and how is one trained to resolve that plus many many lower level disputes, Is the Afgran war a scientific one? Which PhD would you want to listen to and how do you know. I looked at comments in today's NYT and the local paper. Many seemsed reasoned but far from in agreement. How would I integrate all this with many other concerns we have. Is the process scientific. Would a perfect obedient bureauracy help or hurt either before or after a key decision is made. Yes I've read some of Huxley but long ago. I appologize if i am using this wrong I'm only guessing we can offer comments not just quotes. nenem

Perfection
"The veil [of bondage] is very dense at first and the light may be almost obscured, but it is there [within us], ever pure and undimmed - the radiant fire of freedom and perfection" - A very wise man

freedom and perfection
We have perhaps many fires variously defined. We need a lot more than slogans though they can inspire perhaps because they are impericse. Let us say Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. Wisdom or not? One needs to know a lot more for words mean different things. Books have been written on the Meaning of Meaning. I think I threw 2 out perhaps a year ago. Pictures may say something too. Yours may tell many stories that may not be the same. I know the picture on Time magazine about the Afgan woman who was badly treated can evoke many feelings but hopefully not a quick rush to action in a complex situation. We need reason and values and hopefully relevant experience and facts and a willingness to accept uncertainty.

Any one of these recent quotes could be excellent topics for their own threads ... or, do we discuss their wisdom and/or validity here?
