It was supposed to be for new members, since they couldn't introduce themselves in the old thread, but what the hell... Hi, I'm Matt from England, and I like chess too, also poker, music, art, and generally lazing about. I recently moved to the countryside to do some work on a house, that work is now finished and until spring I have the wonderful job description of dog sitter - I'm being paid to look after a dog while his owner is working abroad, he's a huge rottweiler guard dog and loves rolling around in the snow. Before I moved I was a projectionist, and I've also worked as a ride operator at a theme park. My favourite musician is Alice Russell, she's wonderful. Other favourites are Björk, Tori Amos, Radiohead, The Who, Rolling Stones, Bob Marely, ReggaeSkaDub, and I quite like that bleepy electronica music too. I like pretty much most music, from classical to breakcore, though I hate the vast majority of rap music, R&B and chart pop. Oh yeah, and the smoking herb bit.

I'm Wes, I like chess, sipping espresso in Latin American plazas or southern Spain, eat Mediterranean food. Enjoy hiking Inca Trail or back-roading my backyard in rural Montana, or desert trekking at house #2 in Arizona (yes I can see the border from my patio). Retired after working 35 years in management. Former USMC Vietnam Vet (Khe Sanh). I enjoy foreign languages, modern jazz, classical music. I volunteer ... returning vets with TBI and PTSD, with locals with mental wellness issues (aspergers, schizophrenia) & troubled youth who are borderline (abused homes, drugs, crime, etc.). Have lived all over the country and love the country in the country best ... unless I'm in the city for salmon & a glass of fine wine.

Hello, everyone. My name is Cody, and I'm sixteen years old. (I didn't get too creative with the username.) I enjoy reading, chess, and music. My room is a library, with the walls covered in bookshelves and small stacks on my nightstand and dresser. Philosophies, poetries, sciences, fictions--doesn't matter. I play the French horn, trumpet, and mellophone, mainly in that order. I've been playing chess for near five years I suppose, and here recently established a chess club at my school which has been doing very well. Also I love cats. These are some of my finer qualities but hey, I am a sixteen-year-old guy. I do some pretty crazy stuff with my friends. Well jeez, that's that. Feel free to ask questions. Glad to be accepted into this club great club!

Hello Cody, Your profile says your from France yet you play the French horn. Wouldn't it be just a horn in France not a French horn? Like Brazil nuts in Brazil are just nuts!

Happy New Decade
Arguably, this is year one of the new decade since there was no '0' BC or AD...wow what an introduction. My name is Ed, I live in sunny San Diego. (southern California, USA) Been playing chess for 45 years and never tire of the game. Chess is life as we know it on earth. My favorite sayings are "the point of power is in the present"; "laughter is the key the longevity of youth" and "love is the answer, everything else is an illusion." Active with sports, don't watch much TV, because I would rather play chess.

Welcome to the club. It isn't all about chess, but there is some chess-type thinking going on within the various threads ... plus a rather large number number of opinions proffered ... consider participating at your own risk! ... but enjoy your journey no matter where it takes you.

Hello all
I'm Darren. Besides the obvious that I enjoy chess I'm also a blogger & political activist, making this the club for me to join. May not be around that long since I'm on free premium membership because a friend bought one. Anyway, my libertarian views are often controversial so enjoy the links to my blog that I'll post here. Let the debate begin!

Welcome, get amongst it.

Hello
I am living in Mexico City, when I'm not studying the stock market I enjoy reading history, biographies and classic literature, playing the saxophone, listening to jazz and playing with my kids. I am teaching my 5 yr old how to play chess and he really enjoys all the chess puzzles on gameknot. I earned an MBA in international business with an emphasis in finance and I am also a CFA Charterholder but my favorite subjects in highschool were philosophy, calculus and physics and sometimes I wish I had more time to study those. I enjoy a good, civil and intelligent debate so hopefully I can get some good discussion in this club.

G'day and may the great Spaghetti Monster bless you all
My name's Mikko, i'm a student of history at the university of Tampere, Finland. I'm interested in all things current and old but my real fetish is speculating on what's yet to come. I hope i'll become known for presenting my arguments solidly here on the forum and giving you all a solid challenge on the board.

Mr. W M
... welcome to this "world" ... I hope you enjoy contributing, as well as defending your thoughts and speculations. You will be challenged! But there is also much discovery to be gained. Enjoy your journey no matter where it takes you.

Ah...
working man... Do you enjoy the band Rush?

RE: Ah..
Not particularly. My student budget-class stereo system abuses the production of a finnish alt rock band YUP (united urban quakcs) and "old" classics like Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Faith no more and System of a Down.

Hello, I'm Dave. I'm an avid chess player. Win, lose or draw, it's always a worthwhile enterprise. I'm also a musician and a bit of a fiend. Looking forward to discussing things.

I doubt I would know. Merely a traveler, trying to be humble. On a slightly serious note, is there work to be gotten out in the Pac NW in the marijuana business? I think what I'm asking is are there a lot of growing ops, what with the appropriate easing of legislation, etc?

Here's the thing. I ask because your profile says you live in Seattle and though we are both Americans, your section of the country is a bit different than mine, I think. The attitude of both law enforcement and the largely, and understandably, conservative majority here would have and has had me labeled as a criminal for nothing more than deciding what I put in my body. Rather than continuing to beat my head against an unforgiving wall of stubborn ignorance, greed, and silliness, for the first time in my life I want to leave my home, and I think I want to go somewhere in the Pac NW. And I suppose this also gives some insight into who I am, which is what this post is for in the first place.

northwest
it is the best part of the country. it is far more relaxed than most other parts. but herb is still illegal. the seattle police are required by law to treat possession as the lowest priority...but it is still illegal. we will be voting on it in november. cultivation is another matter. it is a felony and they will prosecute, although i do not think they sweat personal use growers too much. we have medical marijuana here and i think you can get a license but i really don't know anything about that.

Dave ...
... this is good stuff to talk about ... may I invite you to start a thread so that we can expound further on the subject? Just copy and paste ... and see what happens. Or, if you'd like one of us can do it for you ... just let us know.

Zorro, i won't post any more here. Thanks for the heads up, I know its maybe a little weird to be asked such questions by a stranger. I've just had it on my mind a lot lately. Chaz, I'll stick to business now.

good morning
Home sick from work today so it's a nice opportunity to introduce myself & play some chess. I like chess (that's my Captain Obvious statement for the day), music (mostly Old Time these days - I'm learning banjo), feeling guilty about not not working out (but I really will get started again), reading (I'm reading all the Stephen Hunter novels right now but have a broad range of fiction & non-fiction interests) and cooking (big fan of America's Test Kitchen). Politically I'm conservative and I look forward to some good conversations here. I do have a sort of wistful admiration for the free spirits evidenced in some of the above posts, but I couldn't join you. One practical reason is that I have one of those jobs where you get fired for engaging in the passtime some of you described. I just rub herbs on the roasts I cook. Anyway, let the battles begin - both chess and debates. Thanks for letting me join.
