until they are 18, out of high school, and usually "on-their-own". Kids do not need to know about birth-control (and how to use a condom) until they are in high school, unless the parent wants to teach them. Kids in junior high and high school should NOT be getting abortions unless their parents are consulted (which means being notified) and they have signed consent forms. Do you approve of your grade school kids being taught about how to use condoms? Do you approve of your high school (or junior high school) daughter being given an abortion without your consent? Parental oversight and involvement in their kids lives is instrumental in growing a moral, decent adult from a kid. Government laxness and liberal laws are not. |

jansofty: Would you rather teenage girls who may be scared to tell their parents they are pregnant until such time as the pregnancy shows, and then too late to abort (regardless of circumstances) to suffer the consequences? The current laws being enacted are quite simply making things more difficult if not impossible for all 'women' (and I include young teenage girls here, and their families) to decide what their options can be. Do you think the republican rights' push for this insanity will end up with the 'government' taking care of all these 'unwanted' chilren (being looked after by slightly older children), or will the republican party machine insist on cutting services that actually help? You are iving in a backward time. It has nothing to do with 'liberal laws'. Minors (under 18) will experiment and have sex regardless of parental pressure, or any laws enacted by government. It has always been thus! Knowledge is the key here, not draconian biblical morals (that are refuted time after time anyway). Of course no-one wants their teenage daughters to become pregnant before they are ready or capable. Unfortunately this happens with regular monotony. Sex is a natural instinct of human beings, and that will never be denied by our youth who are capable of the act at ever increasing younger ages. Would you have ALL these teenage girls 'married off' to some testorone fueled youth who has no idea how took after either the baby or the girl, or the means to support them? |

softycondemned as sinful by these religioous fanatics. And if an abortion is elective, it should be done as early as possible and in ways that ensure there is no conscious pain. Late term abortions should be very rare and based on medical reasons not convenience." Except for calling "Religious" people as fanatics, this is a good conservative view. What are you doing with it? This is NOT what liberals believe.> who are you to tell liberals what they believe? in fact, this is exactly what almost every liberal and progressive person i know thinks. that abortions should be accessible, affordable, and rare. and the way to make them rare is by encouraging the use of contraception and by educating teens about how to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. but true to form, you stick with the conservative view that fascism and ignorance is the answer. and yes, in fact, i think all high school students should be taught to use a condom. and middle schoolers should have access to the information if they evince interest. knowledge is power. ignorance makes pregnancy. |

brains and self control are not developing any faster. They need sex education early or they will get peer education which is far worse. In biblical times people died young and had marriage and sex soon after puberty. You really want to live with teen births and shotgun relationships? |

hypothesizes that the huge increase in artificial light at night stimulates the pineal and accelerates puberty. One thing is sure, with puberty starting at or before ten and girls having babies as early as eight, sex education can't wait until high school like it did a couple generations ago. |

DmI do appreciate the issue that some parents do not teach their children adequately and others consider sex education taboo. |

==================================== Sensible Utah Governor Vetoes Proposed Ban on Sex Ed in Schools Sensible Utah Governor Vetoes Proposed Ban on Sex Ed in SchoolsGood news this morning from the Beehive State — Utah Governor Gary Herbert vetoed a bill yesterday that would have banned schools from teaching contraception as a way of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and instead relegated it to the realm of dirty liberal tricks where so many social conservatives seem to want it to stay. Herbert was widely expected to sign the bill after it cleared the Republican-controlled state House and Senate, but he explained adorably that as a grandparent and parent he considers proper sex education in school the perfect complement to the moral education children receive at home. And that he doesn't want to be a great-grandparent yet because that would make him feel way old. Said Herbert of his decision, In order for parents to take on more responsibility, they need more information, more involvement, and more choice-not less. I cannot sign a bill that deprives parents of their choice. No word yet on conservative lawmakers' next move, but one can definitely imagine their collective reaction when faced with the veto: "Blast, foiled again!' |
