... beautiful ... and they don't look like amateur photos at all.

If you have some serious bank, you can call Astrophysics in Rockford IL. They will put you on their waiting list for a 6" refractor, mount and all the goodies and you can take your own images.

6-inch refractor
that's a very small scope. Good for Planets but not so good for real deep space. But it is a beautiful telescope, no doubt about it. Don't have that good a bank!!. Saved up for 5-years to get my SCT for 14K.

Its not the size but what you can do with it that counts.

For photos or images, the AP Refractor on an AP mount is the best money can buy. (They make a 7" refractor if you have an absolutely unlimited amount of money.)

You are correct, for purely visual observing, you want a big scope.

I have a 10" dob with a Zambutto mirror which is my favorite.

nice Dob!!
i didn't know you observed. Do you live at a dark site or travel to one? My favorite toy right now is the stellacam3 video cam. It displays its exposures on a big monitor . In three seconds i can do better with my 16-inch then a 50-inch scope can do visually at the darkest sites. Because i am fork-mounted and not on a wedge, i can only go up to about 2-min exposures before i get movement. I also observe a lot visually. To me the stellacam is a enhanced eyepiece. What do you like to look at?

16 inch SCT! I hope you have some muscles.

You know, at some point you are limited by the sheer effort of lugging equipment around.

To get to a dark site, I have to drive about an hour into Central Illinois. Its amazing how much light pollution St. Louis MO puts out.

If I want to make a weekend of it, I can go to the Ozark Mts. They have some dark skies there.

I do purely visual observing. If you want good pictures, you can always buy a magazine. Its a lot cheaper!

My favorite targets are the Whirlpool (its gotta be dark), the cat's eye nebula and Albero, if we must limit ourselves to three.

illinawek;my scope is
under a dome so i don't have to move it around. And i hardly ever go to out of state star parties anymore. I did go to stellafane this year.I brought my smaller 11-inch SCT. But its much darker at my house then there. On a exceptional night it can hit 7.0 magnitude and better. On an average night 6.0 mag. If you could post a photo of your Dob i would love it!! Some of my favorite Objects include the Virgo super cluster in spring, M-22,M20,M-16,in the summer and all the fall Globulars. I posted on my profile an image i took of M-20 last spring.

PS; I used to get 'Astronomy' magazine and 'sky and telescope' but they got boring. So i made friends with the Astronomers in 'chiefland astronomy village' in Florida and they send me all the photos i need.;www.cav-sfo.com

I am fascinated by space and astro-physics but I don't have the patience to gaze the sky thru powerful telescopes quite often at night. I am satisfied with the pictures taken by Hubble telescopes and others. It is amazing there are billions of galaxies with black holes gobbling up sun and all matters including lights which cannot escape. Some are clolliding each other. I wonder why US is giving much priority to mars over moon. After apollo flights US never went back to moon. At least US should send robots to moon and explore similar to mars exploration. Otherwise, China will settle and take over the moon. On moon we can build solar stations that will be put to earth orbit and beam back by microwave much needed cheap eletricity.

I wish I could set up a dome, but I would have to saw down all the streetlights in the neighborhood to make it worthwhile.

I have to content myself with finding stuff with equipment I can drag out to dark sites. My ten inch dob is a humble looking thing, but the optics are great.

Ace. Everyone in America should buy an Orion 8i. Check out the Orion website.

I don't think anyone is ever going to Mars for a long time. It takes a month to get there and a single solar flare could zap everyone on board during the trip.
