CAIRO — Israel and Hamas agreed to a cease-fire on Wednesday, the eighth day of lethal fighting over the Gaza Strip, in a deal completed under strong American and Egyptian diplomatic pressure that quieted an aerial battle of rockets and bombs and forestalled — for now — an escalation into an Israeli invasion. The cease-fire, which took effect at 9 p.m. local time (2 p.m. Eastern), was formally announced by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr of Egypt after intensive negotiations in Cairo. It was welcomed by all sides, but whether the cease-fire could hold was uncertain.

zorroloco 26-Nov-12, 17:05	thor because humans only think we are rational. in truth, we are just super smart aggressive apes. we are rationalizing, not rational. and we are greedy beasts. and unless we very consciously strive to heighten our community sensibilities, foster our nurturing side, value our togetherness, we will continue to fight. after all, our economic system is based on competitiveness. it is our nature. until we place community over self, cooperation over competition, and oneness over religious, national, or racial identity, we will not know peace. in other words, we must continue to evolve... beyond homo sapiens to homo cooperantem. i am not hopeful. i think we will consume our planet, continuing to violently scramble for ever decreasing resources until we perish from this planet. then the earth will know peace. for a while at least.

brigadecommander 26-Nov-12, 20:30	i have expressed my views in long essays long before you got here. Read the past posts. This did no good.The zombie mind-set allowed for no deviation from Foxnews talking points. So i just made it simple, knowing full well we were going to win. And loving every minute of it. As for saying the same thing often,...the 'truth' has to be repeated over and over and over again!!! So live with it.

zorroloco 27-Nov-12, 04:38	ed thanks. not sure what you mean about the silent gene. maybe i am being a little slow this morning... do you mean we may pull off an upset, rise to the occasion, beat the odds? it is certainly possible - albeit very unlikely in my opinion. you know what we say in math about probability? the very fact that it is improbable proves that it is possible. while some may say my view is bleak, i disagree. life is great in general, and my life is wonderful, in specific. everything has its time and then passes - as the bible says, 'everything has a season.' and as the kinks said, ' every dog has his day.' we have had our moment in the sun, and we too shall pass - sad that it will be so much sooner than it needs to be, but hey, we are only along for the ride. and when we are gone, it won't make a whit of difference how long we were here, who was president, if we said 'homo,' if henny was ever able to make a meaningful contribution to a thread, or if bc could make a post w/o a youtube link   paz.

thor99 27-Nov-12, 08:10	we do not have to just sit on this earth and slowly use up our resources! there is a big whole space out there! why aren't we going to space? i am not sure of my numbers but in like three centuries we WILL NOT have the resources to go to space anymore and unless someone discovers and anomaly we will have no choice but to use up the rest of our resources and die on this planet!
tugger 27-Nov-12, 15:01	I took BC's youtube link expecting to see her in a wetsuit, and was most disappointed to find a cover of a Bob Dylan song (probably, I didn't listen). Also, henny's homo post made me laugh like an immature child. I think this is better than arguing like "I know best" adults. So yeah, great contribution. If only everyone laughed at silly inane things, people wouldn't be so uptight all the time. I think the leaders of Israel and Palestine should hit bongs and watch a Monty Python film together, that would help ease some tensions.
