He's full of it.

Handguns are used all the time to protect person and home in this country.

Gun crimes PEAKED in this country in 1993. Don't believe me? Go look at the DoJ's own statistics.

Check out Dan Carlin's recent radio blog on guns and gun crime - he's not a republican (or in any way associated with fox news - ha!), he's not a democrat, he's not a libertarian, he's one of the few truly independent voices out there. He doesn't even own a gun.

But don't listen to him if you're not a free thinker. He'll just make you mad. lol

(Dan Carlin, who was a military history major and worked as a journalist for many years, also does a history series - he has one on the fall of Rome which is AWESOME, and one on the Mongols, which is almost finished - it's all free [though older archives are like a buck a show or something])

Was the guy right in saying if the footballer didn't own a gun, both he and his wife would still be alive today. One cannot argue with that.

People here are zany about guns.

I've seen grown men cry at hearings for orders of protection, not because their families are splitting up, but because they have to surrender their guns.

I am a gun owner, but it is impossible to have a rational discussion about guns here. Look at Bob Costas. People want him fired for even mentioning gun violence in a story about gun violence.

Its like when Geraldo tried to broadcast a debate between orthodox Jews and KKK members. All that got done is he got hit by a chair.

If that were true than OJ's wife would still be alive.

I must have it wrong, I seem to remember she was stabbed to death!

Yes, the key fact that OJ not having a gun didn't stop him from killing his wife, just as not having a gun would not have stopped the footballer from killing his wife/girlfriend. The guy was crazy. He had a history of crazy. He was a violent person, engaged in a violent sport, and violent life style... just like OJ. The weapon doesn't matter.

Maybe you should think about outlawing professional football where people get hit in the head all the time.

That is actually on the cards softy, in the US I believe, same as boxing! The fact remains that many in the US die from handguns accidentally as well as deliberately. Many of them children. It is all well and good to say the parents (or gun owners) are at fault leaving guns 'unlocked'. No handguns, no problem.

once again

handgun related deaths *PEAKED* almost 20 years ago

this despite there being more guns now than then

peaked is one thing, but over 10,000 handgun homocides per year seems ludicrous and untenable.

There are between 40,000 and 60,000 deaths by automobile accident each year. Many of them are children. Many are caused by carelessness, incapacity (by alcohol or drugs), or neglect.

Shall we also outlaw cars, alcohol, drugs, carelessness and neglect?
proginoskes

Why is it ludicrous? People kill people.

In a country of 300,000,000+ and there is almost that many guns estimated to be in the hands of private citizen (270,000,000 guns). A low number like 10,000 is pretty damn low given any real honest context.

People don't kill each other because a gun is around. Homicide isn't about guns it's almost always about sex and/or money.

we should get rid of spoons - they make people fat . . .

softaire has a point
the reason children die because of guns is because the parents have not properly trained them in gun handling or at the very minimum "you shall not touch this or suffer the wrath of parents" parents also need to pay attention to where they put there guns and to make sure they are not loaded and that the safety is on whenever they put it down. if everybody did this the number of children that die from guns would reduce quite a bit.

Your post above is not quite right though, is it? No guns = no child deaths from them (or anyone else). All the arguments about automobile accidents, etc, does not take away the fact that guns are designed to kill. Specifically, handguns are designed to kill human beings. They are being manufactured in the thousands and promoted for sale by the unscrupulous arms industry backed by the NRA. The arguments about them (handguns) being used for sporting purposes in the biggest lie of all. We often hear the cry of "The criminals will still get them anyway". This is true, but handgun deaths are very, very, rare in Australia for example. It is possibly due to the mindset rather than availability.

okay but still what i mean is that it would help if the parents paid better attention and taught there kids proper gun handling. but i understand your point.
