Pointing something out in most of the threads
Something I notice in most threads is that people mention articles and wish to discuss about it.

If you have any comments about it, talk away!

sometimes they are started because someone reads something, finds it interesting, and posts it for others. this is a good way to get a conversation going about something topical. many times, someone has a preconceived message they want to send, so they look for something that supports their point of view.

for example: as a teacher, i may be concerned by teen suicide and want to bring it up to see if others are aware of the problem, and/or what they think causes it or how to prevent it. so i mention that suicide is the eighth leading cause of death for all persons regardless of age, sex or race; the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 24; and the fourth leading cause of death for persons between the ages of 10 and 14., and say, look here: www.aap.org" target="_blank">-> www.aap.org for an article that gives important info (of course, some sources are more reliable than others - for example, this one is from the american academy of pediatrics, a reputable group. if i were to cite, oh, i dunno, maybe the us republican party, than i would have to take what they said with a handful of salt).

Jeff, I'm glad you're the type of teacher
to actually care about the students well being outside of school as well as getting them to pass. I grew up with very upsetting teachers about every school I went to, but I was strong enough to take their abuse, although not everyone is as lucky. I think everyone went to school with someone who has committed suicide, and it's really a trying time for friends and families. You're either part of the solution, or you're part of the problem. Nice to know you're one of the good ones to counter act those bad teachers, and I'm sure you know which ones I mean.

I am probably in the minority..I dont like links to articles.
I would prefer someone to cut and paste the most relevant points/arguments, adding their own views and comments. The exception would be tables of figures or statistics, then it would probably be unavoidable. There again, I dont mind long ( or even very long ) posts..if its a subject that interests me I will always read the post carefully from beginning to end...again that probably puts me in the minority.
