big brother??
as a teacher, i now do all my paperwork on the computer. it is now fully integrated so that attendance, grades, parent communication, discipline files, contact inf, everything are on the computer and i can see it all...even input my grades from home.

so, i am calling 9th grade parents to introduce myself and invite them to our open house. i am able, with each student's file i pull up, to see this years attendance, cumulutive academic records and discipline file....so suddenly, this sweet ninth grade girl in my 1st period has 29 (!!!) discipline events in the last 2 years! now, i have a whole different impression of her than i did before i saw that info.

is that ok?

OK?
From where i sit it would depend on what that impression IS? If you are flagging her as intrinsically "bad" in
some way as a result of having access to that data then I'd humbly suggest that's not helpful. if you are
noting that she's emitting more than her "fair share" of challenging behaviours or that the discipline events
are all generated by one teacher/carer and it's arousing your curiosity about what might be driving that,
then perhaps it'll enable you to be exploratory or proactive in all sorts of helpful ways.

bad
none of my students are 'bad'...although some of the exhibit poor behaviors : )

thanks...that is the way i see it too...although i can use it a tool for good, it rubs me the wrong way...

depends on what you mean by ok
As a teacher who takes a personal interest in his students, you have a power to influence kids that is second only to the parents. (...sometimes greater than, unfortunately.)

Is it okay that you know a little bit about this young lady who is obviously having a bit of a hard time dealing with authority? Will it help you to connect with her and form a mentor relationship?

Probably. If she's sugar and spice and everything nice on the outside and a ball of trouble on the inside, odds are she's rather intelligent and calling for attention. It's good to know that sort of thing up front instead of assuming that she's just another sweet young girl destined for a quiet life of student council and chess club.

Give her some Vonnegut. Change her life. You go, teach.

Jeff
I find that very disturbing though not surprising.

What you're looking at is but a snapshot of what's happening in the world. The information thats been collected on her will become a part of her 'file' and will remain even after she leaves school. As more databases are linked, the picture becomes more complete.
With just a couple pieces of basic personal information, I can lay your life bare right here on my computer screen.

I can learn where and when you buy food, gas, cloths, etc. I would also know what types and how much of each thing you buy. I can review your movie choices, your credit, your criminal history and soon, your medical history.
With this information, I can map your movements over time and accurately predict where you'll be and what you'll be doing. I can even do a psychological profile on you if I wish. I can poke and pry into every aspect of what you think is your private life. >
Pretty cool huh?

Will I use this 'tool' for good or ill? Should I even have this tool? The more important question is, can anyone do anything about it?
The genie is out of the bottle.

it is the brave new world, and it is real, and it is happening - mostly for the sake of convenience

Still
I have access to confidential information too.

And I treat that information confidentially. I never talk to others about a specific situation. It is not wrong to use confidential information to help someone with something they would otherwise never address. But on a certain level, we are obligated to do something. God bless the teachers.
