ASTROLOGY
Is there any substance to it ?
I am pretty open minded myself, especially as some years ago I compiled a list of famous birthdays....
took me bloody ages. b.t.w. I was especially careful in verifying the accuracy of the dates...
What I found interesting was how certain traits did indeed show up in different star signs....
Most astrology books that I have read, which isn't very many, stress the fact that Aries is always in a hurry...
How about this line-up from Aries
(March 23rd)
1912 - Wernher Von Braun : german rocket engineer. Developed the V2 and the Saturn 5 rockets.
1921 - Donald Campbell : British engineer. attained the highest land speed record in a 'wheel driven' as
opposed to jet or rocket powered vehicle. He reached 429.311mph in his 'Bluebird' at lake Eyre salt flats in
South Australia.
1929 - Roger Bannister - English athlete, first to run a mile in under four minutes, a feat that had been
considerd an impossibility.
1931 - Yevgeni Grishin - Russian speed skater - worlds fastest in the 1950s and early 60s. First to cover 500
metres in less than 40 seconds.
1938 - Craig Breedlove - American jet-powered car racer who was the first to set records of 400, 500, & 600
mph on land.

Married to an Aries....? Wear your seat-belt!

I've always considered it to be complete nonsense, but ( there is always a " but " )..I went out with a girl years ago who was uncannily accurate at guessing peoples star signs after a few minutes conversation*, way beyond the mathematical odds of probability.

* No, she didnt just ask them their birthday !

i am a cynic
but, there are times when it does seem uncanny...my wife is married to an impetuous, forthright, arrogant aries!

the question is, do we begin to act a certain way because of the 'pressure' to be what people tell us we are supposed to be? in other words, do we internalize the traits that are supposed to epitomize our astrological?

as someone who has studied the subject in depth...
Valuable as a learning tool when it comes to studying the human psyche and the life stages we all go through, but as far as accuracy and science goes, it's more along the lines of art. (Specifically, the art of bsing oneself into believing something is true just because it sounds good.)

I can guess peoples' sun signs, and occasionally even their moon signs/ascendents with some accuracy, but I attribute this to subconscious conformity to what they've read about themselves. An example, I'm a Libra with a four planet stellium in my eleventh house, with my moon in Scorpio and Scorpio rising. This makes me a very sociable person, concerned with the larger relationships between people and groups of people, focused on science and politics and revolution... on the outside. As far as my inner self goes, I'm a very intense person, deeply intuitive, subtle and a little dangerous when mad.

Actually, this applies to darned near everyone you would ever meet, but having read this about myself and listening to the way that it "rings true" at a time when I was figuring out who I was, I am bound to emphasize those parts of my personality. Except for when I don't.

Same goes for my sister, who has a four planet stellium including her sun in Capricorn in her second house. She's very good with money and numbers. How much of that is directly related to the fact that I was very into astrology at the age of 19, when she was 11 and really wanted to learn from her big sister? I'd venture to guess... lots.

If we're talking about the science and the math behind astrology (something that anyone who has taken the time to memorize the difference between a sextile, a trine, a square, or an opposition and what orbs of separation make any of the above significant in a chart is going to take very seriously), something that really needs to be taken into consideration is precession. www.skeptics.org.uk" target="_blank">-> www.skeptics.org.uk

In other words, fun hoby, but zilch in the way of foundations in reality.

Out of the millions
born under each sign, there will be many, many people who excel in any endeavor and thus you can point to them as being representative of that sign (see it works), but there are as many people from the other signs who also excel in that endeavor, so like Kem, I say it's fun to play the game but means nothing.

I am a Taurus,
but I'm sure most of you could tell that already. Perhaps I too believe in this enough that I've seen 2 types of each sign. Each sign takes up 2 months, and I have a brother who is also a Taurus, but born in April, and I in May, and we're almost completely opposite. I notice this occurrence is quite common, as I suggest any of you who know other people with the same sign who were born in a different month. I do know there are characteristics, that occur prior to, or without knowledge of astronomy, and it's very interesting to find them. About the birthday thing, I think there are only 365.24.....days in a year, so the chance of someone being on it is like 1:365.24. . . . . I liked how your aeries were all some type of racers or engineers. The ones I looked up were all artists, but the only thing I play is guitar. I have been told that I could play well, and I write great songs, but I cannot sing very well. Perhaps there is another sign that has good singers, I could search for?

Fascinating Coincidence
I had my chart done about 2 years ago by the friend of a friend. I too am very skeptical and I barely gave it a glance, hardly a second thought, or even a first thought. Anyhow, I've been in a bit of a difficult space, internally, over the last several days, and somehow I happened to come across that chart again and all these handwritten notes from the girl who did the chart. Well, I was feeling vulnerable when I reread all this stuff, and by god if it wasn't freakishly and frighteningly accurate. I poured over it for maybe 45 minutes thinking perhaps I had found the key to unlocking all of my psychological and emotional issues from the past. Then the pot wore off and I realized it could have applied to anyone. But it's weird, I was up late last night looking at my chart, and here comes qiwi today with this thread.

One other thing...about 5 years ago I was up late at night in Upstate New York, no civilization for hundreds of miles and no light pollution. I was looking up at the big beautiful sky when ZOOM! Aliens!! No, just kidding. I was just looking at the billions of stars and for just a moment it seemed possible, just maybe, that there was some sort of resonance between life on earth and all that sky. But it is probably just too geocentric to think in those terms. However, there is no telling either way. Who hasn't looked up at the stars and been struck with awe?

I don't believe in astrology
but then I'm a libran and libran's don't believe in astrology.

I used to believe in astrology when I was younger. I read a lot about the subject and even did horoscopes for my friends. It really is astounding how some people are exactly like their signs say they should be. I, for example, am a prototype of a cancer. But then again, I was born on a same day (different year, obviously) as Sylvester Stallone and George W. Bush, and I don't really see anything similar with them and myself.

I once read of a study where a bunch of people were sent an individual horoscope, and asked how well they think it fits them. Surprisingly most people thought it fits them very well, even though they all received exactly the same horoscope. It has been suggested that we all just pick the bits that suit us and forget the rest.

Sirtgl.....
Unfortunate about sharing the same birthday as 'Dubya' & 'Rambo' and the one you conveniently forgot to
mention, Nancy Reagan....... but hey on the same day you also have Adolf Anderssen.... the German chess
master forever remembered for his two masterpieces, known respectively as the 'Immortal game' and the
'evergreen game', Bill Haley who will probably be forever remembered for his classic hits 'Shake rattle and
Roll' & 'Rock Around the Clock', and the current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.

Heh heh
Thanks Qiwi.

You know, I am somewhat of an idealist, so I can see how Sir Thomas More and I have that in common. Perhaps its reincarnation.

I hope to do something extraordinary with this life. Hopefully soon, so that you can put my name on the list.

In conclusion, we have proven astrology to be completely accurate in every way, and if you don't believe you will be reincarnated as a toadstool for poisonous wart-causing toads.

On a more serious note, part II
(edit to replace "astronomy" with "astrology". small whoops there...)

<<I was just looking at the billions of stars and for just a moment it seemed possible, just maybe, that there was some sort of resonance between life on earth and all that sky. But it is probably just too geocentric to think in those terms. However, there is no telling either way. Who hasn't looked up at the stars and been struck with awe?>>

A life without awe is one that is not worth living.

What we do with that awe, where we allow it to lead us... that's the great adventure. The trouble with relying on assumptions that don't hold up to close scrutiny (like, for instance, the validity of astrology) is that it opens us up to making bad choices. For instance, if I walk into an interview thinking that my natural gift for gab and the proper alignment of the stars for a favorable change in my career is enough to snag the job for me, and don't do my homework because I know that the cosmic vibrations will carry me to where I want to go, I might get that job. I'm pretty fast on my feet. I might get that job and continue to believe that my big decisions should all be timed to match the favorable transits, and avoid making big decisions on days when cosmic vibrations don't support me. I might miss opportunities based on that belief.

Worse, I might not get the job, and assume that the universe is out to get me instead of placing blame where blame is due. Life is tough, and you can't rely on anything but yourself to get where you want to go.

It's a poor strategy, this looking up to the sky and assuming that it is filled with benevolent goodwill and predetermined fates (although, to be fair, any astrologer who can draw up a half-way decent chart will say that they work with potentials, not certainties) instead of cold indifference. Life can really kick your a** if you rely on it.

Frivolous entertainment is always fun. Almost as fun as pulling apple crisp out of the oven to share with your co-workers the next day...

Mmmm... smell the digital yumminess.

Hey, if one has to work on a Saturday, it just makes sense to make sure there are good eats to go along with it.

I share my birthday with..
Errol Flynn...obvious similarities there.
Brian Wilson..I'm pickin' up good vibrations.
Lionel Ritchie...Hello, is it me you're looking for ?
Nicole kidman...yummie, yummie.

Tennessee Williams Leonard Nimoy Bob Woodward Diana Ross - cool!
Keira Knightly - hmmm...maybe she will come to my birthday party?

17-Sep-06, 01:31

Errol... sorry Leo...
It may be best not to mention this to Pawntificator but Nicole Kidman was born in Hawaii....
All in all apart from 'tripod' Flynn, and Nicole there seems to be more of a musical bent to your day...
1924 - Chet Atkins - guitarist & pioneer of the 'Nashville sound'
1936 - Billy Guy - vocalist with the Coasters 'Yakety Yak', 'Charlie Brown', 'Poison Ivy'.
1946 - Cyndi Lauper - singer - 'Girls only want to have fun.
..and for something completely different :
1954 Allan Lamb - South African born cricketer and one of the mainstays of the English cricket team during
the 1980s.

oops. Well, now I'm caught up and HOLY CRIKEY! Pawn you lucky dog, sharing a birthday with the Bob. That's a profound coincidence if I ever heard one! Well, for fun Qiwi, I will tell you a person who shares my birthday, then you can figure it out easily, and tell me who matches on your list. Her name is Aubrey Hepburn, and she was the hot sister. Both of them were spectacular actresses though. That is probably the only famous one I share, but maybe your list is different than mine.
