Dr. Doom
The United States firearm fatalities: 10,801 homicides in 2000.

Medical malpractice is currently the third leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 200,000 people in the United States die each year due to mistakes by medical professionals and prescription errors, according to a recent report from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

You're safer driving drunk with a bunch of gun nuts than getting treatment from a Dr.
LOL!

Thanks a lot Thumper.
I'm due to have some surgery in three weeks. I'll be leaving word, that if something happens to me, Thumper is to "get his".

But, I'm not worried, I don't even know a Dr.Doom. My guy is named "Murphy". He'll be there protecting me all the way, I'm sure!

I'm here for you Softy...
Just make sure that you clearly mark the area to be worked on. I know people who've had the wrong limbs/parts cut on, and/or removed. 8-(

Another tidbit
Number of physicians in the US: 700,000.

Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year: 200,000.

Accidental deaths per physician: 0.285

Number of gun owners in the US: 150,000,000.

Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups): 1,500.

Accidental deaths per gun owner: 0.00001

Statistically, doctors are approximately 28,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

"FACT: Not everyone has a gun, but everyone has at least one Doctor."

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand. As a Public Health Measure, the statistics on Lawyers have been withheld for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical aid.

Thumper, please provide where you got these 'facts'.
Number of gun owners in the US: 150,000,000. That seems a little high, that would be over 50%, and there are lots of kids in America that cannot legally be on that list.

Soulcrates
You're right, good catch.
The estimated number of gun owners in the US is much lower than the 150 million that I posted. It should be based on 50% of the ADULT population not TOTAL population. My mistake, I should have caught the error but I posted that at the end of a long day.
Note: The revised numbers also change the post made in the, 'In for a penny', thread. I'm going to stay away from stats when I'm tired.

This would put the number closer to 108 million owners though I'm finding more conservative estimates of 75-80 million owners.
The numbers come from; Gallup, ATFE and the US Census Bureau.
The problem is data collection. People refuse to disclose weapons ownership to strangers so there's no way to get concrete numbers short of searching everyone, their homes, businesses, etc.

The medical numbers come from the U.S. Dept. of Health Human Services and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
With the above change, Dr.s are now only 14 thousand times more likely to accidently kill you than a gun owner is. I feel much better.
