School veil woman loses discrimination claim
"A Muslim teaching assistant who refused to remove her veil during lessons today won her employment tribunal case for victimisation against the school which suspended her but lost her claims of discrimination and harassment. "

Thank goodness or we'd have to let the school kids wear hoodies.

why do you think that? there is no comparision between a hoody and a religious garment. my school allows religious head covering, but not hats or hoodies. is is a non-issue.

Actually Jeff....
... the Niqab (face veil) is not a requirement in the Muslim faith, it's not a religious garment, it's a personal choice.

ok
but head coverings are required.

No argument there.....
..... jeff and obviously any garment required under a person's religion must be permitted.

Somehow the niqab (face veil) is becoming a bit of a political statement over here. Perhaps not surprisingly, we have a natural distrust of people who insist on covering their faces. Any petrol station / bank and a lot of other buildings have signs saying "remove crash helmets & hoods as they make the staff nervous as they think they're about to be robbed!!

A hijab is what most Muslim Women wear. it conforms to religious requirements and is commonplace on our streets.

For the avoidance of doubt
"Hijab" is a word that indicates several conditions for the women's Islamic dress as outlined in the conditions below:

1.Clothing must cover the entire body, only the hands and face may remain visible.
2.The material must not be so thin that one can see through it.
3.The clothing must hang loose so that the shape / form of the body is not apparent.
4.The female clothing must not resemble the man's clothing.
5.The design of the clothing must not resemble the clothing of the non-believing women.
6.The design must not consist of bold designs which attract attention.
7.Clothing should not be worn for the sole purpose of gaining reputation or increasing one's status in society

A lady..
..from the muslim council of Britain was just on the radio commenting on the verdict.

She agreed that a full face veil on an English teacher, who was taking a class of kids learning English, was inappropriate as the kids would benefit from seeing the teachers face, lips and expressions. She went on to say that in these "difficult" times when muslims are under the spotlight (somewhat) then it would have been a good gesture for the woman to remove her veil as it is a personal issue and not mandatory under Islam.

The word she used a couple of times was "moderation".

I wish there were more like her. If there are, I wish they would speak up.

I heard the same interview, always listen to the radio when walking the dog.
I agree, her views were the most sensible I have heard for a long time..she also said Muslim women should be aware of the effect their appearance had on other people, and that they should consider when the wearing of the veil was "appropriate "...all commonsense really, but refreshing to hear.

I'm sorry I missed that.....
... interview. I wholeheartedly agree with jay and leo.

Commonsense perhaps and all the more welcome for being so.

The Niqab....
I am assuming that the interview in question is the same one I heard on the BBC world service....
Personally I do not like the use of the veil....it is a crap look and I dont agree with the reasoning behind its
use....

I guess some Muslim women....
... wear it to show their love for Islam. After all, they are required to be pretty coy when around strange men. A Muslim lady on TV today said "I wear the veil so I don't have to take my make-up off when I go out because only my husband can see me with make up on because its just for him and I don't want to keep taking it off when I go out and if people don't like it it is they who have the problem not me"

That explains everything then!!

Watch the news because soon (i guarantee it) we are going to hear this:

"Five men robbed a bank at gunpoint today. The gang, dressed from head to foot as Muslim women complete with false boobs and face veils got away with £300,000. Shocked staff told police - 'There's no camera evidence as they had their faces covered the whole time and we didn't like to ask them to remove their veils'.
