Democracy
How does a person decide if he/she lives in a democracy please?

She looks to make sure she/he doesn't have elected representatives or a Constitution, because if he/she does, she/he does not live in a democracy, but in a Constitutional Republic with the right of sufferage.

Does that mean that a Constitutional Republic with the right of sufferage is un-democratic? If so why do states of that nature claim to be so?

de?moc?ra?cy? [di-mok-ruh-see] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -cies.
1. government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people
and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system

A Constitutional Republic would probably be properly called a special type or subset of "democracy" in that
goverment is elected by the people, but the government is restricted in ways set out in the founding
document of a Constitutional Republic

I would contend that the USA and UK
are not democratic in nature but merely elected dictatorships, the voter being sovereign for only the five minutes it takes to register his vote. For the next four or five years he has no control or say over what is done by the dictators in his name. I would also contend that this condition is the root cause of the problems of the western world. Until we have some sanction over those that 'represent' us we are, essentially, disenfranchised whatever motions we go through which would seem to contradict that fact.

And yet
deneb000, the system in place in America is the best we could come up with. We have as many checks and balances as we can get, yet the fact remains that things are getting worse.

While you can blame the system to an extent, the real reason is because of people who are, if not evil, certainly insane. And no I'm not talking about Bush or republicans or democrats. The evil insanity spreads in all directions. You have probably experienced a bit of it personally in your own lives. It may even be a part of you by now, inside you hidden from the world, clinging to the fringes of your soul. I know I certainly have a bit of the darkness to deal with.

But the system tries. If we can catch someone doing something wrong, we punish them. And I feel most of the people are trying to do good, if not for the darkness pressing down from above: the hidden source of power and money.

Money money, money money money money. Money! It isn't real. And people really do sell their souls for piles of paper make-believe.

So vote for me. Just kidding, I heard politics turns you completely evil. I wouldn't want to get involved with that, except for talking about with friends.

But that is probably the real problem. Not enough of us that kind of care about things wants to get involved with that horrible world of politics. So the evil will thrive, and no one will be there to fight it. We must stop it! Who's with me!?! We will join politics and run for public office, gaining support among the internet citizens of the world, getting everyone to get up and go out their door, look around at each other in wonder, all of us standing in the street looking at each other. Do we realize we are the same? Or do we go back into our house and hide? Do we use our power? Do we stand up and fight for our country? DO WE TAKE BACK AMERICA!?!??? YEAHHHH!!!!!! GO GO GO, everyone get up and run out your front doors screaming!!! YAGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Jeez
I ran out screaming, the only one. There was nobody else there except a group of people who stopped and looked at me. One guy pointed. Nobody was with me. I slank back into the house.

Well dammit, something is going to happen, whether we get up or not.
