This seems the most likely explanation...

" The exact origins of cricket are unknown, but is believed to date back to the 16th century, the name deriving from the Anglo-Saxon word cricc, meaning a shepherd's staff. It is thought that the first players were English shepherds, who used their criccs as bats and the wicket gate of the sheep pens as a target for the bowlers or pitchers."

Tugger, lol
I agree, calling it football is ridiculous, but we needed to have a better football team than England, and we couldn't do it playing soccer, so we just changed the sport on ya! It worked. About the crickets, they've been here before your game was, so they win that argument. In our football, we're allowed to kick field goals, which are like your kicks in rugby thru the uprights. We get 3 points for them, and 1 for the try after the touchdown. Leo, that sounds legit. I didn't know a shepherd's staff was a "cricc", but that would related to why it's called cricket. They do use a bat like a golf club, but call it by the name of the bat, instead of the golf club. Thanks for helping me learn something new. Perhaps I'll one day have to try cricket, since I'm a huge fan of baseball. I was a pitcher, so maybe I'll try pitching. I can throw a baseball over 70 mph, but I'm sure with some regular practice again, and a steady workout regiment, I could top 80. Accuracy is important, as is change of speed.

Wow, I think I'd be better at Cricket than baseball.
I used to have trouble with umpires not calling strikes, so I had a clever way of dealing with them. I would have my catcher lazily attempt to catch the ball, but make sure he doesn't, and I throw the ball as hard as I can at the facemask of the umpire. When he expects the catcher to catch the ball, he doesn't flinch. Then the catcher drops his glove a few inches, and WHAAAAAAAAAAAMMMYYY!!! I put them on their butts. That usually evens out the strike calls, but if it doesn't, then we see how many times I can hit the umpire in the face before I get thrown out.

I predict England to draw the Adelaide test, and the following 2 and win the final test on the last day in the final over with the last wicket pair batting!!!!

Damn these cigarettes are good!!!

england 279-3... much better... kp and collingwood are putting on a good partenership... if freddie can have a good bat this time, we should get a good first innings score...

now i've gone and sais it, haven't i... i bet even as i type we've lost another wicket... let me check...

phew... 280-3...

we need our bowlers to have a good test too... if so, it's ours...

No collapse tugger !....551-6 declared.
My congratulations to tugger and others who " kept the faith "...I must admit I had my doubts that we would be able to bounce back.
The bookies are still going 2-5 on for a draw... but a generous ( ? ) 11-4 ( best 7-2 ) against an England win in this 2nd test...might be a bit of value there ?

If only...Ashley Giles had held that catch...it would have been 79-4, Australia in real trouble.

To many if only's re the England cricket team and English sport in general at the moment leo.

If only Geriant Jones could score some runs!! If only Harminson could bowl, if only they picked Panesar who is a match winning bowler!! If only Andy Robinson had not been given the job of England rugby coach, if only Hodgeson could kick or play as well for England as he does for Sale, if only Wilkinson was not injured!!

The list is long we have high expectation (is this because of the hype by the press) but low achievement!!

well we finally got that bloody ponting out... i don't think there is much room for doubt, and i really hate saying this, but ponting appears to be the best test batsman in the world at the moment...

this one looks a draw... two days left, we need to work through the tail quickly, get to around 250-odd i reckon, then declare, get them in bat and attack with everything we have...

that's always the bit i find difficult... when the right time to declare is... you have to make sure you don't set them a low enough target to realistically catch, but you have to leave enough time to bowl them all out...

we lost?!

it's over...

we deserve to lose the way we batted second innings... we were like scared rabbits...

you can crack the champagne out, well done australia...

if we pull this back it will be a miracle...

i just hope we win one...

we deserve to lose the way we batted second innings... we were like scared rabbits...
