music
we had a thread like this some years ago... but...

what, if any, music do you play? singing? drumming? classical? pop? band or solo? in the
shower? writing music? with the radio in the car?

i have played acoustic guitar for 20+ years, but really only
played a lot for several years. otherwise, i played several times a year and a lot on vacation
traveling. as of this summer, i hadn't picked it up in over a year : ((( why did i ever put it
down? (oh right... i was studying arabic : )

i started playing again in august. what a joy. i have been learning new songs, relearning old
songs, working on technique, and jamming with a few guys once in a while (not enough). i
play everyday for at least 30 minutes. usually more. thinking about taking some lessons
which i have never done...i am self-taught except for impromptu lessons from people i have
jammed with.

i know it is just my opinion, but everybody should play some music... it is so joyful!

I listen ...
... to everything ('cept Country) ... I particularly like Spanish guitar and well-played piano ... but I personally do not have playing skills. I'm part of the audience who applauds.

My family
(uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, brother) all are/were very good musicians and most of them have played in the bands for a lot of big name stars. I must be an adopted son because I have NO talent in that area. I listened to myself play the trumpet once and thought I'd just go get sick it was so bad.

So now, like Chaz, I 'll sit in the audience and be one who appreciates but does not participate.

I write lyrics and songs.
Which is occasionaly interesting, as I cant read/write music, sing well nor play an instrument much beyond chord keys on an organ but I think they are cool and I love playing around most nights with different rhythms and chords and words and just seeing what happens. I've only just found out I could do this a couple years ago and I've frankly amazed myself with how much I love it and how good it can sound at times. I do it for fun but would love to have a band or someone help turn them into finished songs, I have the chords, the words, the melody (usually hidden in my singing!) but feel they need someone more accomplished to finish them off, add the extras.

Jeff is right, it brings me real joy. :))

I've been meaning to get Ableton installed on my computer so I can make some filthy beats. Gonna get that done by Christmas. I'll most likely have given up on it by summer, realising it's not as simple as it sounds. But I bet you I can frighten the dog and make my house vibrate in the process.

If ever I have kids, they will be playing instruments from an early age, whether it be piano, trumpet or 303. I agree with Jeff. Everyone should play music of some sort, even if it's just singing and dancing round the house! Music brings joy.

our house is now full of instruments, usually just lying around in a mess, but the kids just pick them up and play. Keyboards, piano, tambourine, blues harp, guitar, bass. My eldest is doing trumpet lessons and he sounds fantastic (at times!). They are always making a noise and its nice to know at least some of it is tuneful. Always singing too, joy indeed :))

i played pianp 8-10 and violin 11-13 but didnt practice due to lazy, poor tuition but
mostly lack of perceived relevance in type of music learned "hipness" in the teachers. I've
messed with a small repertoire of finger picking tunes on guitar since late 30's but havent
progressed much due to episodic practice and soft washing up hands sore on steel strings
phenomenas....

I bought a clarinet on eBay about six weeks ago and have been having a ball relearning
the treble cleff, doing a tune a day type book and "noodling" to music on the radio. I'll
plan on learning some formal scales within the next few weeks. Trickier in many ways than
the sax but love the sound and it's light and compact.

I been playing music for about 25 years. The only instrument that really came natural was drums,
but I played t-bone in high school, and I play guitar and bass now. I sing, only when I have to.

There is a picture of some of my guitars on my profile page.

I couldn't possibly list all of the types of music I play, but mostly I stick to classic rock, classic
ballad, contemporary rock, contemporary ballad, and progressive rock.
