Camels
For all the conservationists put there:

In Australia there are around 1,000,000+ Camels running wild chewing up everything in sight causing even greater dustbowls for the continent, and ruining the eco systems. The question is what to do about this. The Australian government has just earmarked $19 million for a 'control program'.

Anyone have any realistic suggestions?

That's one idea (LOL). Seriously it has become an ever increasing problem in Australia. It is eroding the outback in a big way, causing very serious problems. Culling is the obvious answer but then we would have all the animal lovers jumping up and down and crying 'foul'. The camels are depleting the limited vegetation at an alarming rate causing massive dust-bowls which contribute heavily to water depletion and increasing temperatures (from dust-clouds), and so on.

Hey... we gotta do what we gotta do, right?

Anyone who has a problem with controlled extermination should just come up with a better idea.

to me
a lot depends on the question of introduced vs. native. if they have been introduced by humans, as rabbits and cats were, i see no problem with culling them down to reasonable numbers or even exterminating them. if they are native, i would suggest that it is humans who have encroached on the camel's native habitat.

i see they are introduced, and so i, and i believe most true conservationists, would have no problem with culling the herds.

Common sense solution: cull the herds of camels
Right-Wing solution: Nuke Australia

<<News of the culling brought some namecalling from the press, with Erin Burnett, an
anchor on CNBC, calling Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd “a serial killer”.

“He has launched air strikes - air strikes - against camels in the outback.” - Burnett>>

"airstrike" made me laugh!

Seriously
Can you eat camels? I am dead serious when I say kill them and give or sell the meat to hungry people. Australia has a real water shortage, camel just might be a blessing in disguise. Herd the camels up and make a business out of them. If camel taste like crap then never mind :)

Camel farming for meat is already being used I believe. Also Australia exports Camels to the middle east in considerable proportions. jeff is right to my way of thinking, culling extensively is the only viable solution. Camels were introduced almost 150 years ago to help with exploring the continent. We now have the same problems with: Canetoads, Cats, Rabbits, Horses (Brumbies), Camels. The country is so big and diverse almost anything (except water) is in abundance for almost anything to grow (animal or plant). The natural order of things is enough to compensate for native species (except the ridiculous laws against culling Crocodiles introduced in the seventies, valid then, not now!). Introduced 'life' is beginning to take over rapidly here.
