As Washington reels from the news of 10.2 percent unemployment, the Center for Responsive Politics is out with a new report describing the wealth of members of Congress. Among the highlights: Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven members of Congress are millionaires. That’s 44 percent of the body – compared to about 1 percent of Americans overall. CRP says California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa is the richest lawmaker on Capitol Hill, with a net worth estimated at about $251 million. Next in line: Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), worth about $244.7 million; Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), worth about $214.5 million; Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), worth about $209.7 million; and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), worth about $208.8 million. All told, at least seven lawmakers have net worths greater than $100 million, according to the Center’s 2008 figures
zorroloco 07-Nov-09, 07:35	that is what the system has brought us to. when publicity buys votes and money buys airtime, it is natural that rich people are gonna get elected. crappy too. they sure don't represent you and me. one more sign of the mess our country (not just our country) is in. the system is rotten.
chaz5 07-Nov-09, 10:21	thumper ... ... this is a valid observation ... and one that raises many questions. In some cases, like the Kennedy's it's family wealth. Some write books or give speeches. But obviously for many others it's ... uh ... "earned" and saved from on the job "earnings." How can our culture or our media (or some other medium) expose more of the inappropriate behaviors of these elected elite?
illinawek 07-Nov-09, 10:32	Who else is going to run for Congress? If you can raise the Millions for a run for Congress, why would you take a job for $125K per year? The rest of us have to earn a living. Of course they are all rich.
