23 -Liberia
Graham Greene again: Journey Without Maps. He went there in 1937 to escape a libel action from Shirley Temple arising from a film review in which he criticised her 'dubious coquetry' as a child actress.

We have had Ethiopia before so I have numbered this 23.

24 - Cote d'Ivoire
Boasts having the largest church in the world, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in the capital city of Yamoussoukro, the folly of a former president.

(a technical question)
Can you all read properly if I say : ( Côte d'Ivoire or à côté tout près ) or do you see strange things.

Should I avoid using accented characters. I am never sure how internet transmits these charaters.

Accents
The accents have all come up. I thought that the Academie Francaise had abolished the circumflex accent as serving no useful purpose.

chessman (Accents)
I do not know the latest news about all this reform of French (simplification). I think all these reforms are good, and they are doing it with respect : you can use the new way or the old way. So accents will not disappear tomorrow.

I don't know anything about Sudan, to my shame

25 News from Sudan
I can say here what I know about Sudan : it is the largest African country (but not the most populated - that goes to Nigeria). They are having a king of civil war betweed Muslins and the Christian minority, mostly in the Darfour area (west). That's about all I know.

Remember Idi Amin. He expelled the Ugandan Asians most of whom came to the UK and were very successful because of their work ethic.

And that's after a lot of brain wracking (or should that be racking?)

That's me done, I think

30 Republic of the Congo
rikle mentioned it in relation with The Democratic Republic of the Congo.
So I still have the right to mention it here.

This is the former French Congo, with its capital Brazzaville (in honor of explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza (one of these names I will always remember, don't ask me why).

Whereas the other Congo (formerly Zaire) was before 1960 the Belgian Congo.

I like to explore the world with Google Earth. I noticed the capital cities of these two countries face each other on each side of a river (Brazzaville and Kinshasa). But there does not seem to be any bridge between the two cities.

36 Guinea
We skipped 36 so let's call this one 36.

Guinea : A small, poor country in West Africa. It used to be the name of almost all of West Africa. The former English coins called guineas were thus named because the gold used came from the region called Guinea.

I am not sure whether this is on the list of 54 counties as it is currently disputed territory. Morocco claimed the land when Spain started decolonisation after the death of Franco.
