Apparently I miss something because my introduction has not been printed.
My name is Jean-Pierre, 60 years in a few weeks ( time is flying...), and in a early retirement .
I lived 35 kms west from Paris but my roots are in the south west of France.
As my wife and me ( see our photo in my profil) love a lot live in Paris, we try to keep a house in the 2 points : Paris and Biarritz.

I try to read, generally old writers. Presently I am re reading Zola works. After I will probably read the Thousand and one nights.

I am also a member of an association who debates about Philosophics items related to from where are we coming, what is our place in the Cosmos...

HI THERE !!!
Hi All !

My name is Jeannie and I was born and raised in New York. I really do enjoy poetry and sometimes even dabble in writing some myself. My true passion however is music. My favorite genre is rock and roll. In the last two weeks i've gone to see the following concerts: Roger Waters-Pink Floyd, The Who and The Rolling Stones. All phenomenal shows. Tonite, (9/29) I go see Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Some call me a concert junkie. I call it true excitement. I love to play chess but only learned last year so im not very good at it.

YET.

Hello everyone!
Bonsoir =)

My name is Rit and I am from Korea, but currently living in France, as an exchange student. I love art, especially paintings, and music, and movies.. as well as literature - which are actually all richly combined and often integrated into something else =) I have played the piano for 17 years, and now kinda into jazz, mainly fusion and smooth jazz but other branches too.
About chess, I am not a strong player at all, but I love to play it and study it. In general I don't refuse any challenges comeing in, but as my games are full, I cannot accpting any challenges for the moment. =(
Anyways glad to meet you guys! Have a nice weekend all.

My name is Page. I live in North California with my 3 kids. I am a classical musician, I play the Viola. My 3 kids all started learning ballet at around age 3, and became really devoted, serious students. My oldest, my daughter, had to stop at age 18 due to injuries, but my sons still study, dance and perform ballet regularly. My daughter has gone on to college where she majors in Theater. I love to read, though I developed a health problem 8 years ago that has limited that. I live in a small city, and our nearest decent art museums are a 2 hour drive away, so I do miss that.

Thanks for having me in your club.
Hello everyone!

My name is Adrienne D'Nelle. I was born and raised in the great state of Texas. I spent my childhood in the coastal plains along the rice belt, where the landscape is so flat you can see the horizon in every direction. I don't live there anymore, but I visit as often as I can.

I'm not really that into art or philosophy, but I do love to write. I especially like writing poetry, but I don't actually read much of anyone else's work. I actually enjoy reading fiction novels more than anything else. My favorites are "Pride and Prejudice," "The Count of Monte Cristo," "Anything for Billy," and "Rebecca." I enjoy lots of classics, including "The Phantom of the Opera," and I have read another book that tells the Phantom's life story. It was written recently by a different author, but for any fans of Leroux's original classic, "Phantom" is richly detailed with all the events that molded the Phantom into such a facinating character. I thought it was exciting, scarey, moving, appalling, and sad. It was a good book.

Right now I'm a college student majoring in Engineering. If anyone wants to discuss math or science (especially cosmology) I'd like that!

It is good to be here.
Hello everyone. My name is Ray and I currently live in St. Louis. I have lived in a few other places growing up so I don't really know where I would say i'm from exactly. I started writing poetry my freshman year of high school and have written several over the years. There is a site Poetry.com that hosts amateur poetry contests and all semi finalist and finalist are published in their books. I have had 2 published that way myself and plan to send them more to see how many I can get : ) I also like talking about a wide range of topics and even subjects I don't really know anything about. At that point I just listen unless I have questions. I am a firm believer that you can learn more by listening than you can talking when you don't have a clue. We are all entitled to our opinions though. I look forward to meeting all of you and hope to have many great discussions.

Hello from downunder
My name is John living in Geelong in the state of Victoria, Australia. Although I migrated from England in 1971 I took for my I.D. the name "Cobber" which is Australian for friend or mate. It is also the name of my Labrador dog which is far more important.
I took early retirement so I have time for more intellectual pursuits which I don't pursue often enough. Hopefully I will get some ideas from this club.
I would describe myself as a secular buddhist. Favourate composer is Beethoven, favourite poet depends upon how I feel.

My name is Amita. I am from Melbourne in Australia. I am Indian though I was born in Fiji. I have a passion for poetry and always enjoy a good read.

I share with you one of my humble piece:

You are like a distant star
To be admired yet not attained
A celetial being
To be yearned for
Always out of my reach
A tune sung briefly to tease my senses
One that life denies me the priviledge to sing
one day I shall leave this world
My desires clutched deep within my soul
And life will end without you ever knowing
that there ever existed

Hi
My name is Jesse. I grew up in a small, upper-middle class town along the northeastern coast
of Massachusetts. I have recently dedicated most of my free time to studying chess tactics,
as I will be entering a tournament within the month, and besides this I wish to learn if I have
the capacity to become a master player. I am now twenty-eight, and for the majority of my
adult life my most consistent passion has been literature, although that has been muddled by
other, ambivelant interests, like the culinary arts, and trying to escape reality through
ephemeral means. Hemmingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is my favorite novel, for it's
emotional richness and profound expression of the depth of the human heart. Hemmingway is
known to have been a rough, arrogant man, but I tell you he understood the spirit of things.
"Death in the Afternoon", a treatise to bullfighting, which I don't neccessarily personally
condone, is another astounding Hemminway work. Also, "The Brothers Karamazov", by
Dosteovsky. I have the image of Alyosha kissing the e(E)arth at night on the grounds of his
monastery after anguished prayer forever printed in my mind, and I am by no means religious,
nor, practically speaking, spiritual. That is an astounding novel. For a long time I wanted to
write poetry that would change the world, or at least those who read it, but my standards
vanquished my efforts, and I have not tried in some time. I hope to learn from all your
thoughts here. Thank you.

Raskalnikov confessing in the town square....
Yes, Crime an Punishment is also a profound work of art, although I liked The Brothers
Karamozov more for it's more sweeping, vast quality. Interestingly, Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell
Tale Heart" deals with the same subject matter: the guilt built of taking another life. Although
Dosteovsky's work obviously delves quite a bit deeper. The cataclysmic boiling point to the
novel, when Raskalnikov confesses his murder in the town square (if I'm remembering it
correctly, I read the book just once 8 years ago) is very powerful indeed.... Do you have
copy? I have long since parted from mine. I would like to read that particular section again
though....

Salut!
My name is Mirela, I live in Vienna, Austria (Europe). I am 24 years old and I'm still a parttime student (french and german literature). I was working for a video rental shop for five years and I just quit this job because I've found a parttime job as a librarian now. Social climbing! Wait for some more decades and I'll have got my own credit card and won't no longer rely on my father for paying my annual gameknot fee. I speak german and french, and even a tiny little english as everyone on this world is supposed to. I understand romanian, but I'm not very good in speaking it, which is a shame if you consider that my roots are romanian. I like going to the movies, to the theatre and opera (in Vienna, there a three big opera houses and a small private one). I like poetry and french literature (19th century, but also contemporary writers such as Jean Echenoz). My favorite books are "Wuthering Heights" (Bronte), "The Master and Margerita" (Bulgakow) and "The woman in red" (Nedelciu/Babeti/Mihaies). Actually I read a lot of children's books for my new job which turns out to be a great pleasure (I have just discovered an american writer called Polly Horvath).
I'd like to thank Rainer Maria for his invitation to join his club.
Nice to meet you!

Hi Everyone
Apparently I posted to the wrong spot. Not to fear, I'll learn my way around the forum. My thanks to Rilke for inviting me to join.

I'm Pat from Oklahoma and I enjoy many things. Books have always been my first love and I enjoy all genres. If I had the power to give one gift to the world it would be the joy of reading.
Presently I'm reading books written by Robert J. Conley about the history of the Cherokee people, their legends and myths. I love Fantasy and True Crime. Usually I read one genre until I'm filled to the gills then I switch to another. The Dragonriders of Pern are my all time favorite of the fantasy genre.

I enjoy poetry although not much time is spent with it anymore. My early life was spent with Poe, Keats and Byron. I devoured the novels written by James Fenimore Cooper. At University I loved the Greek Tragedies. I've dipped into some of all of it and feel the richer for it, but now I spend my time with Chess and GO, trying to learn both. When I'm not playing I'm studying. When I'm not studying I'm reading and sometimes even trying to write poetry of my own. And sometimes, I even find time to leave my lone pursuits to enjoy the world around me.

Introduction
Hello Everyone,

My name is John. I'm very happily married (16 years) and have two fantastic kids. I live in Baltimore, Maryland, which is near Washington, DC. I enjoy all forms of art. I am an avid reader and enjoy all literature. I love to write and I welcome any correspondence. While I have little to no musical talent, I thoroughly enjoy all types of music. I enjoy most art. My screen name is based on the Aubrey-Maturin series of historical novels by Patrick O'Brian. Master and Commander is the first in the series. I also enjoy Gabriel Garcia-Marquez but my taste ranges all over the place from Anne Rice to Jean Genet to Thomas Malory to J.K. Rowling. Favorite poets include Tennyson, Dickinson, Poe, Ashbery, Gerard Manley Hopkins, the British Romantics, Shakespeare. Musical tastes range just as broadly; Johnny Cash, The Clash, Prince, Mozart, and a few guilty pleasures - John Denver, Barry Manilow, just to name a few. I'm also a practicing Catholic, but I am also a strong advocate of religious tolerance. Love philosophy - I guess I'm a philophilosopher. Aristotle, Descartes, and if you'll indulge me, Skinner. I love life and also enjoy discussions on all topics, but especially leadership, credit unions, personal finance, and, of course, chess.
