Philosophy
Is the study of the truth or principles underlying all real knowldege.A calm and reasonable attitude accepting things as they are and making the best of them.It is a love of wisdom.
Its purpose is to portray as an objective and unemotional pursuit of the truth. It is to reflect and show how questions and questioning are vital to our lives.

Una Opinion
Hola Amigos

Good idea to bring the historcial perspective of Philsosphy. In antiquity, the pre-socratics view Philosophy connected with the origens of the Universe.

Philosophy
For me Philosophy is a method to try to know himself and so to apply the Socrate's sentence :

Know yourself and you will know the Universe and the Gods.

Socrates
He also said "the unexamined life is not worthy".
"Know thyself" was Socrates main stream of Philosophy. When he confronted the Oracle, to find who was the wisest man in Athens; and even when the Oracle said that he was the wisest man of Athens; he was still not satisfied with the Oracle's answer. So he start asking questions to poets, artists, politicians, philosophers......he found out those ppl knew their craft, but they did not have the enough knowledge to know what they know.
In conclusion, Socrates claim that he was the Wisest man in Athens.Even Socrates did not write anything;but his legacy is still with Philosophers and with us. His place in Philosophy is very important for the study of future generations.

Socrates
a lot of answers are inside us. Remember Oedipe and the Sphinx ( by the way a beautiful painting from Ingres)...Oedipe found the anwers inside him..

Oedipues
Yes ,indeed he found his answers so late. After all Oedipus saw better his insights after losing his eyes.

What, then, is philosophy?
It is the persistent effort to transcend the limitations of science while respecting the fundamental standards of intellectual attainment upon which science has come to insist.
It is also the effort to transcend the limitations of religion whie respecting or not the fundamental standars of faith and biblical foundations.

The Philosopher has an eye of wonderment at the world;an individual research in the critical and rigorous fashion in which that wonderment is satisfied.

Whitehead
Alfred North Whitehead's Process and Reality ( 1929 ), claims that "every philosophy will suffer a deposition". If he is correct, philosophies comes and go. None has the last word. but each one contributes to a conversation destined to continue as long as people ask questions that seek understanding and wisdom.

Phil Haverstick's question...your thoughts
If I awake one morning and find that I'm a cockroach (see Kafka's "Metamorphosis"), would I recognize the world? I think the answer is "no". But, what does this answer imply about the nature of reality?

what is a philosopher
All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher.

What is Philosophy
Philosophy is speculation. It begins where science ends?

Too abstract
Prof. Walter Sinnot Armstrong said that Philososphy is too abstract to define it. It is controversial. Even between People who called themselves Philosophers can not agree or find an answer. It can be a systematic or method to view life. The greeks called Philosophy as "Love of Wisdom."

self-refuting
To say something lacks a definition is to give one-albeits inadvertently! In this case philosophy is being defined as a subject that cannot be defined!

Live by philosophy
But a Human being can live by his/her own philosophy. It is a manifestation of life; just like energy; you cannot see it. but we it is manifested in many forms.

A little redundant?
It is perfectly true that objects can exist and be nowhere. However not much is being denied by my humble attempt. When one lives by a 'philosophy' one is in a constant state of speculation. Is life itself not 'doubt'?
