Authors I enjoy
I have to admit most of you probably see fantasy books such as Tolkien a waste of paper and talent, but I really enjoy these types of books. They excercise my imagination and the characters are usually very memorable. Here are some of my favorite fantasy authors in no special order

David Eddings
Ed Greenwood
R.A. Salvatore
Dennis McKiernan
Piers Anthony
Anne Rice
Terry Brooks

There are others as well, but these are authors I have read almost everything they have written so far

Les Miserables
by Victor Hugo. Just wonderful, it was a pleasure from cover to cover. With such memorable passages as this, it was a sumptuous treat: "However cleverly we may have carved the mysterious block of which our life is made, the black vein of destiny reappears continually." (Or in chess parlance, should that be the black knight of destiny!?)

TERRA NOSTRA
The masterpiece by Carlos Fuentes.

The author found himself inspired by a history so fantastic it had to be re-experienced as fiction to be believable as a story.

Because truth is not composed just of facts but of what you feel is true.
Like the best of Eudora Welty or Virginia Woolf or Selma Lagerlof or Witold Gombrowicz, but taken to a whole new level.

THE DEATH SHIP
by B. Traven, known better for his lesser work "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," a study of the greed for Gold, filmed by John Huston and with Walter Huston and Humphrey Bogart.

But DEATH SHIP with its tinge of expressionism is not such melodrama, but a masterpiece that stretches the possibilities of using fiction to convey hope, dreams, friendship, work, and the human experience, both outer -- and inner.
