G.I. Gurdjieff quote...
I would consider this one, albeit it is not my own, nor is it a single sentence; but profound
indeed!
"If a man could understand all the horror of the lives of ordinary people who are turning
round in a circle of insignificant interests and insignificant aims, if he could understand
what they are losing, he would understand that there can only be one thing that is
serious for him--to escape from the general law, to be free. What can be serious for a man in
prison who is condemned to death? Only one thing: How to save himeself, how to escape:
nothing else is serious"
If you think of it, this is really just a prolix version of rilke's sentence above.

true indeed

A question re:I
so tell me, rilke...what do you think would be the case where a person has intellectual disability and is not capable of normal thought patterns and is not able to think logically...where would he be according to Descartes?? very interested in your comment

Hard to say
I don't think Descartes was not even thinking on such scenario. The famous slogan is just a comfirmation for him, that he was real on what he was rationalizing at that very moment during his profound meditation.

Any comments anyone??
Intersting. so was that comment made about meditation? on its own merit i suppose there would be a lot of flaws attached to it, dont you think?
for a healthy argument sake...does a person think while they are asleep? And if they dont do they cease to exist?

A comment
Yes people still think while they sleep in the form of dreams. Our brain is always functioning and sending signals to all parts of our body. Even people in a coma have som brain activity. If our brain ceases to function then we die.......in essece we wouldn't exist

true
there are flaws. But when you read Descartes'6 meditations...he was tryiong to solve the mystery of what was the nature of truth, and what to rely on. He confirmed that the senses were not giving him the complete information about the truth. So in order to find the truth of his existence, he knew that his thinking was at least for real,at least something that exsit.

At least in sleeping I am not aware of Myself (on the consiouness level), but the mind does not stop functioning.I believe in meditation, is the only way the mind can feel its proper rest.

Reality
I think reality fits in with the nature of truth. We see life a certain way and that's our reality, our truth. Then, something happens, an emotional shock of some type and time seems to literally stand still for a few minutes. When those few minutes are over, it is as if we stepped into another world where our perception of life, of people, our entire reality shifted and changed. We never look at life the same way again. What is the truth, the reality? The way one looked at life before the shift, or after the shift? In the twinkling of an eye the world changed.

The Maya
I agree with tootsie on the perspective on each individual seeing or perceiving life. The changes happens and suddenly something has changed. But Life or the reality of things has not changed; it is the individual who has changed.
The hindu's philosophy has called this life an illusion...or "The Maya". This world is not permanent....a constant changing every second of its existence, or our preception of the world is changing every second of our lives.. In a way, it is the Nirvana of Buddha, where things are permanent.

from the 'Gita'
The word 'Maya' also means unreal, illusory, or deceptive image of Reality. Due to the power of Maya one considers the universe existent and distinct from the Supreme Being and the drama of life goes on.

Tootie's words
that is quite true what you wrote...how our perception of things change depending on what circumstances are surrounding us...and one would think that the events are the glasses which change the scenery before us

goodness passion and ignorance
Three Qualities Of Maya's Material Nature

Maya's material nature (including all matter) is composed of three ingredients called Gunas in Sanskrit. In English "Guna" can be called "quality". These three qualities are Saatava (Sat or Sato), Raajas (Raj or Rajo), and Taamas (Tam or Tamo). In English, these three modes can be called goodness, passion and ignorance, respectively. They are like intertwined strands of the winding cord or rope of Nature. These three qualities are part of Maya or delusive force inherent in the creation. Through this medium, Nature holds in bondage all embodied beings — Maya's delusive force makes us forget the Self ("Hari Visrai"), it gives rise to emotional attachment ("Moh Upjai"), and it creates duality ("Bhaau Doojaa") where there is none.
