Albinoni
Venice,June 8 1671; died in Venice, January 17 1751.
For many years Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni was regarded as a minor Violinist-composer who has written 50 forgotten operas, whose themes Bach chose to use as variations subjects. He was born in Venice from rich parents, academically trained, he chosse to descirbe himself as a "dilettante Venete". He had the fortune in having no need to earn a living as a Composer.
His style lay somewhere between Correlli and Vivaldi, light in nature, with many of his operas in the opera buffa category.

The work which by his best known is the Adagio in G minor for organ and strings, and it is not a typical of him or his period. His other works: The Op. 5 set for strings, the Op 7 for Oboe and strings and Op. 12 for violin and strings are now frequently played and recorded.

Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach was born is Eisenach on March 21,1685.The Bach family history shows a line of musical talent back for some 400 years and Musical Bachs were abundant in Upper and Lower Saxony.
The young Sebastian was sent in 1700 to a choir school run by Benedict monks, where he won a scholarship.is voice broke down after, and he was kept for his skills as a organist.
By the age of 18 he had written many keyboards works and church chorales and his reputation was spreading.
He went to Weimar as court musician and then to Arnstadt as a organist for two years.
Married to Maria Barbara Bach in 1707, he settled in Weimar for 14 years, and became a Konzertmeister to the Duke in 1714.He went to Cohen, the place where he wrote his famous Brandeburg Concertos, dedicated to the Duke Christian Ludwig of Bradenburg, in addition to his French and English suites for the clavier and large number of oratorios, passions, masses and cantatas.

Death of his wife happens, the mother of his first 4 children, then within a year he married again to Anna Magdalena Wilcke. Bach traveled to Leipzig for a position, it was offered to telemann, but he declined it so Bach took it.
In Leipzig he wrote 200 around 200 cantatas (1723-1750). His osn Carl P. E Bach was employed by Frederik the Great. Still his fame was only as a organsit, and his music was not known outside of Leipzig.

Bach: :Part II
Bach wrote music without pause all his life,he did not wish for fame; his only desire was to serve the Church. Mostly his cantatas were written for St Thomas's in Leipzig. His best known works are "Sheep may safely graze", "sleepers awake", and" Jesu, joy of man's desire".
Better known is his grandeur "St Matthew Passion", which stands with Handel's Messiah.
His Goldberg Variations and the Art od Fugue were part of his Leipzig's lifetime.
Nevertheless thw world probably thinks of Bach firstly as the Composer of the inmortal Bradenburg Concertos, the Suites, the splendid concertos for violin, harpsichord, and other instruments (including his Violin Sonatas and his organ works).

He died in July 28 1750. Like Mozart, he was buried in a n unmarked grave. His remains were rediscoverd in 1894.

Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583 - 1643)
An Italian musician, one of the most important composers of keyboard music in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods.

He wrote a large number of works for the organ and harpsichord, including toccatas, capricci, fantasie, canzonas, ricercare (a generic name for any contrapuntal piece), dances and variations. Among his best known works is the Fiori musicali (1635), a collection of organ works designed to be played during the mass service.

Frescobaldi was one of the inventors of the modern conception of tempo, making a compromise between the ancient white mensural notation with a rigid tactus and the modern notion of tempo, which is characterized by acceleration and deceleration within a piece.

Frescobaldi's music was a very important influence on later composers, among them Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Sebastian Bach (Bach is known to have owned a copy of Frescobaldi's Fiori musicali).

Mussorgsky
Modest P. Mussorgsky was born in Karevo,Pskov district on March 21,1839 and died is St Petersburg, March 28,1881.

Mussorgsky became one of a group 5 nationalistic Russian composers known as "The Mighty Handful" or "The Five", the others being Balakirev,Borodin,Cui, and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Borodin's initrial impression on Mussorgsky was not so positive, due to the Composers lack of fpower of concentration, his heavy drinking, leaving so many unfinished compositions, frecuent nervous illness and never seem able to settle in a job or home.

In 1863 he was obliged to take military service, due to his family loss in the estates becuase of the serfs. In 1867 left the military service , and became a living as Music teacher and acompanist, but a year later he had to return to service.
This is the time he composed a number of Operas such as a Salambo (1863-66)and Sorochinsty Fair (1874-80). Boris Gudonov begun in 1869, was a great success when it performed in 1874.His opera Khovanschina was unfinsihed. In 1877 he completed his 4 songs and dances of Death. In 1875 his fits of dementia is due to his heavy drinking.

Night on the Bare Mountain and Pictures of Exhibition it is a beloved work and most famous of his music repertoire.

He was barely 42, when he collapsed and died in the Military Hospital. After his death Korsakov and others revised and completed his works and scores.

Mussorgsky achieves a clarity of expression and a stark, dramatic power few others composers can match.

Mozart
Autrian composer born in Salzburg, lived in Vienna in later years (1756-1791).

What can be said of possibly the most famous composer?

A child prodigy that succeeded unlike most child prodigies. And unlike most great composers, he did not revolutionize music, he simply took the forms that were there in his time and simply raised them to perfection.

Died at the age of 35. The greatest loss music has to mourn. If you just stop to think what would be left if all great composers died at that age... And yet his last ten years produced some of the greatest masterpieces. And great works composed at 10 or 12.

My definition of what Mozart means to music : Mozart wrote music; all the others tried to write music, sometimes very successfully.

Shostakovich, Dmitry
Born in St Petersburg (Russia), Sept. 12,1906; died in Moscow Aug,9, 1975.

Toward the end of his life, Shostakovitch said :

" The Revolution, I am convinced, is what made me a Composer. I was very young in 1917, but
my first childish compositions were dedicated to the Revolution and inspired by it."

In 1926 and 1927 he produced his First and Second symphonies. In 1930 his The Nose was
performed in Leningrad.

He remained a true Soviet composer, devoted to socialist ideals, despite two savages attacks
b the regime in 1936 and 1948, which branded his music as formalistic and full of petty
bourgeois sensationalism.
In 1940, he was awarded the Stalin Prize for his Piano Quintet. He was made a People' Artist
in 1954and was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1956.

When Stalin died in 1953 Shostakovitch was a world figure. During the period of cultural
thaw, he produced his finest works, including the Tenth symphony, in which is style is more
inward looking and pessimistic.
