Hamlet, William Shakespeare
Every time I read/hear/watch this play, the character Hamlet intrigues me. He seems so real, believable, human. Hamlet's hesitation in killing his uncle is a fascinating scene to me.

Robinson Crusoe, Daniel DeFoe
This tale of adventure and survival on a desolate island is enriched by Crusoe's psychological struggles, introspection, and spiritual growth.

The Stanger, Albert Camus
It is the epitome of existentialism. The main character (Meursault) takes us to a journey of an absurd ride with no hopes and happiness. The world seems so alienated after all.

Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis), Franz Kafka
Original idea for a story, poignantly delivered. Has one of the best first sentences ever.

The Odyssey
A timeless tale of bravery in the face of peril, trickery, and revenge. Throughout the ages, scholars have made casual references and allusions to situations in this epic work within their own writings, with the assumption that the reader is familiar with the tale.

The Bible
I hesitate to include this sacred text, because as a Christian, I believe it to be so much more than a work of literature. I include the Bible on this list not because it is holy and sacred (which I believe it is), but simply on its merits as a work of literature. Even before I became a Christian, I found the Bible to be an amazing book. The creation of the world, through the history of Israel, through the songs and proverbs of old, the words of the prophets, and the life and works of Jesus and his apostles keep the reader captivated.

Meditations of First Philosophy,by Rene Descartes
Rene Descartes's masterpiece on questioning his existence on life, and rising the questions of Mind-and Body, Time and Space. Primarily his doubt's about God's infinite existence.

Descartes is considered being the Father of Modern Philosophy.

Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift
A delight for children and adults. There is plenty of comedy in this book, which is commonly thought of as an adventure tale, including humorous (though cynical) social and political commentary.

El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha (Don Quixote), Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
Often cited as the founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote has been credited with c. 500 million copies sold, making it #4 on the best seller list of all time, behind only the Bible, The Writings of Chairman Mao, and the Qur'an. This is one of the few stories that make you laugh out loud as well as cry. The relationship between Sancho Panza and Don Quixote is wonderful and bittersweet.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll
Metaphors and concepts from these books are still common today. Some of my favorite poetry is included in them as well.

The Charge of the Light Brigade, Alfred Tennyson
A poem written about the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. This poem is probably now more well known than the Crimean War itself. This is a powerful, impacting poem.

While we're on the Russians

I'll pick Three Sisters... no wait... Uncle Vanya... no hold on a minute... The Cherry Orchard... The Seagull...

What an amazing writer! What profoundly moving, desperately dark (yet strangely uplifting) plays...

I wish I could write like that!
