A Glimmer of Light
Here is a poem I wrote in honor of a dear friend who helped me through hard times and then disappeared from my life unexpectedly.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Glimmer of Light by Jim Byler, May, 1999

What is this darkness that befalls me
Enveloped with an unexplained sadness
Bound by chains of despondency
The unparalleled pain resulting in great madness.

Anguish seemingly more than I can withstand
All my dreams vanished, my goals cast aside
My confidence gone up in black clouds of smoke
Oh, the terror that surrounds me is covering wide.

But wait, there at a distance
A glimmer of light approaching
Rendering me even a speck of hope
Offering comfort through this horrendous encroaching.

Darkness gradually turning to light
I can almost see my way
With a lighted path
The pain is slowly losing its sway.

Now the light is shining brightly
My pain has all but subsided
Once again my life is worthwhile
I’m standing with purpose I have decided.

Over time the light begins to fade
How can I continue to stand
All alone without direction
I feel as if though I still need a guiding hand.

As fear overcomes me
I shout in utter dismay
Oh, dear God
How can you take the light away.

“Jim” replies God
“I sent the light to sustain you
Now the light must go
Enabling another to become anew.”

Years have gone by
I tearfully reflect back to the glimmer of light
Realizing that I’m now standing with purpose
I thank God for sending me hope in my time of blight.
