Poetry Defined
What Is Poetry?

"The poem is a little myth of man's capacity of making life meaningful. And in the end, the poem is not a thing we see - it is, rather, a light by which we may see -and what we see is life." ~Robert Penn Warren

What is Poetry?
"Everything one invents is true, you may be perfectly sure of that. Poetry is as precise as geometry." ~Gustave Flaubert

dADAIST pOEM
To make a Dadaist poem:

* Take a newspaper.
* Take a pair of scissors.
* Choose an article as long as you are planning to make your poem.
* Cut out the article.
* Then cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them in a bag.
* Shake it gently.
* Then take out the scraps one after the other in the order in which they left the bag.
* Copy conscientiously.
* The poem will be like you.
* And here you are a writer, infinitely original and endowed with a sensibility that is charming though beyond the understanding of the vulgar.

-Tristan Tzara

Dadaist poetry and art
Will have to try the "Dadaist poem" one of these days... In the meantime, try this: "Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks."~Plutarch

Poetry is not natural
Just thinking out loud here...

If poetry is to be anything, I think we have to first make a distinction between what is natural and what is crafted by humans (including speech) I would not agree that a sunrise, for example, was poetic in itself, without the human intervention of describing it.

This might include a painting of a sunrise, a melody or crafted lyric, a performance, or any other method of description.

The observed sunrise cannot in itself be poetry, unless all things are poetry, which would render the word meaningless, IMO.

Once the sunrise has passed through observation to human description (whether verbal or physical or whatever), then from description to a further observation *through the filter of the description*, then IMO it could pass as poetry, or you might say "art". Even if this means simply turning to yourself and thinking "that's a poetic sunrise", then it has passed through your own description.

The Dadaist Surrealist is fond of "automatic art", which she believe is profound method of liberating the subconscious. In this manner, rational and deliberate poetry is avoided.

So I suppose an elephant's poo could be described as poetry, but it is only poetic once it has been given the human description of poetry. An elephant poo which is not poetic, is not poetic.

Hmmmm...

Poetry is a Friend, and Lifts the Thoughts of Man...
"The great end of poesy, that it should be a friend to soothe the cares, and lift the thoughts of man" –John Keats
