Modern Defense
Lately, I have played a lot of modern defense (1.e4 g6)
I want to improve my play with that opening, so does anybody have tips or ideas to play it?
I'd appreciate it

The Pirc and Modern Defences are two closely related openings based around the fianchetto of Black's king bishop. The main starting position of the Pirc arises after the moves 1e4 d6, 2d4 Nf6, 3 Nc3 g6 and it s a defence to 1.e4. In the Modern Black starts with 1...g6, 2...Bg7 and it can be played against 1.e4, 1d4 or virtually anything else. The advantage of Modern is as Black you don't need to study and learn many openings defenses against White. The problem with Modern is you can lose control of the center if your are not careful. I like GM Lev Alburt's " Pirc Alert ". and Joe Gallagher " Starting out: the pirc modern opening books. What books did you study?

Modern Defence
Jon Speelman & Neil McDonald did a book "Modern Defence" on Everyman Chess Publishers back in 2000, not a bad coverage of the opening.
Look at the game Arturo Pomar vs T. Petrosian Siegen Olympiad 1970.

1. d4 g6 2. c4 Bg7 3. Nc3 d6 4. Nf3 Bg4 5. g3 Qc8 (This shows Petrosian at his provocative best, 5...Bxf3 was a better threat.) 6. Bg2 Nh6 (this move was the idea of Duncan Suttles whom I once played) 7. h3 Bd7 8. e4 f6 9. Be3 Nf7 10. Qd2 c5 11. dxc5 (11.d5 gives white a positional edge.) ...dxc5 12. O-O-O Nc6 13. Kb1 (13.Bxc5 was critical here.) ...b6 14. g4 Rb8 15. Rhe1 Rb7 16. e5 fxe5 17. Ng5 O-O 18. Nd5? (obvious but 18.Bd5! e6 19.Bg2 Nxg5 20.Bxg5 Nd4 Keene & Botterill in The Modern Defence.) ...Nxg5 19. Bxg5 Be8 20. Bh6 e6 21. Bxg7 Rxg7
22. Nc3 Nd4 23. Rxe5 Rgf7 24. Ne4? (Getting his rook in a fatal tangle, 24.Rf1 was correct.)Qc7 25. Rg5 Rf4 26. Qd3 h6 27. Nd6 hxg5 28. Nxe8 Rxe8 29. Qxg6+ Kf8 30. Qxg5 Qh7+ 0-1

Thanks for your game. T. Petrosian was a former world champion from Soviet Union. Even at the GM level people make mistakes. You can see the bad moves by the ? marks. I believe we should concentrate more on studying tactics rather than openings and exploit on opponent's mistakes by applying the sound knowlege of tactics.

Hort's Modern
THE MODERN DEFENSE by GMs Vlastimil Hort and Edmar Mednis is my arme de guerre. Hort is a master of middlegame tactics, and Mednis of opening strategy.
29 games deeply annotated -- almost move by move -- give you the experience of playing this opening. It is as if you are not just reading about it, but thinking it, feeling it, and absorbing it with every blow and counter-blow. In a language free of computer analysis, guidance such as:
"Who can blame Black for such an active thrust in a bad position? Black has had enough of a passive waiting game; sometimes such a blow may change the whole nature of a fight."

Compared to Modern, the good thing about Pirc is, there are more books on Oirc. I am now studiying GM Lev Alburt's " Pirc Alert." second edition. It is a well written books with a lot of diagrams and is easy to understand. Although it is intended for Black to face 1.e4, it can also be used against 1. d4 accoding to Nigel Davies on his DVD, " Universal ...d6. Please verify the validity of that statement. If it is true we don't need to learn many openings.
