IMPLODES+K = Excellent Chess
Our founder of this club sent me a message that we should not limit our discussion on chess openinings only and should include every aspect of chess including middlegame, endgame, strategy tactics etc. He also advised to chnage the name of this club. I would like to change the name to " The Club for Chess Excellence". I believe the meaning of " Excellence " is clear. To excel means remarkably good. We want to play good chess and there is no question about that. Having said that any member of this club can propose a new name. If there are several good names, we can select one by majority votes similar to the political elections.

Before I explain about " IMPLODES+K = to play Excellent Chess, let me explain about implodes and implosion so that you can remember easily for the rest of your life.
en.wikipedia.org
During second world war there was a top secret plan to develop WMD called Manhattan project where top scientists all over from USA assembled and figured out to build a nuclear bomb. If you go to the above link, you will see how implosion type nuclear bomb works. Basically, you put the plutonium or uranium in the center of the bomb surrounded by explosives in a metal sphere. The explosives when detonated simultaneously from all sides equally will exert enormous heat and pressure on plutonium which again exploded very big in a chain reaction as a nuclear bomb. The experiment was successful and the US dropped a nuclear bomb each on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing thousands of Japanese and thus dropped Japan to her knees. The war ended very quickly. The analogy of war and chess is grotesque but the goal is the same, that is to kill the enemy. The more you can kill and defeat the enemy within a short time you will become a good warrior in war as well as in chess. This is the name of the game.

ace, just to set the historical record straight. . .
If you think it is that straightforward to round up and persuade a group of top physicists,
each a man of conscience, to build for your Military to use on civilian targets
the most destructive and horrible weapon ever conceived --

think again.

it was a horror conceived to end a horror.

With the promise of a weapon that would end the Nazi horror
of rounding up Europe's Jews and gassing Jewish women boys girls and men by the millions
in the ovens of Hiter's concentration camps,
refugee Jewish physicists in America were persuaded to band together and create an weapon to unleash Einstein's theorized power of the atom when mass is converted into energy --
and after years driven by the goal to end Hitler before he killed another million Jews ....
they produced a fission bomb
that actually never was used against another white-skinned enemy like the German Nazis--
but in its infinite wisdom the U.S. Military decided it was OK to use the anti-Nazi weapon
against the yellow-skinned enemy of the hated Japanese -- and in cities with high concentrations of its people. . .

In less eloquent dialogue...
The H-bomb and A-bomb subject and analogies should be handled with utmost delicacy, especially on an international forum such as this.

I'm an American as well, Ace, so I think I know where you're coming from. But as Shamash pointed out, the complexities of that period in history and the ramifications of it should be held with deep respect for everyone involved. Perhaps a name that does not hearken back to the killing of thousands of Japanese, many of whose descendants we may very well play here on Gameknot, may be a better choice.

I agree with you that war is very horrible and in big wars like first and second world wars there are inevitable collateral damage killing many innocent people. Atomic bomb was discovered late and the allied troops were winning in Europe. There was no need to use nuclear weapons against Germany in Europe. To fight the Fascist Japan was a different story. In the battle of Iwo Jima although the US won it was a bloody fight. So, if the US invaded Japan without the use of nucear bombs about 1 million lives will be lost. By using atom bombs on 2 large Japanese cities less than 200,000 lives, mostly Japanese were lost. The end justified the means. It does not matter whether, the skin color is black, white or yellow, at times human beings are very cruel against each other. Please go to the above links, Japanese killed 250,000 in Nanking and over 100.000 in the construction of Burma-Thai railway. At one time Mongol king Genghis Khan ruled ruthlessly by his army in eastern Europe and Asia. You are saying that intelligent physicists should not invent such horrible weapon to kill innocent people. Do you realized that God also killed innocent people? Let us focus our attention on chess. Legend said chess was invented in ancient India so that warring factions would fight peacefully on chessboards without loss of lives and property.

I agree with you. It should be handled with utmost care but as the saying goes, " If you don't study history, history will repeat again." we cannot keep it in the closet and forget about it. For example, some neo-nazi skin heads and Iranian president Ahmedinijad want to ignore the Jewish holocaust where 6 million Jews were slaughtered by Nazis during second world war. Jews disagree. They built holocaust museum and reminded the plight of Jews on how much they suffer in those difficult times. Please let us focus our attention and concentrate on chess. Otherwise, it will be an endless debate.

IMPLODES+K = Excellent Chess

IMPLODES+K = Excellent Chess. This is not my original idea. It is taken from Chess Life May 2008 issue by Dana MacKenzie who got the idea again from Jeremy Silman's " How to reassess your chess." I have this book also and Silman's concept of excellent chess is summarized into this nutshell. The first letter I stands for " Initiative" which means " begin." In military terms, the closest meaning is, " Pre-emptive war or strike.' If you go to the above links you will find the importance of pre-emptive strike. In 6 day Arab-Israeli war of 1967, israeli airplanes bomb the airfields of Egypt, Jordan and Syria first. The Arab troops became sitting ducks and Israel won the war. The analogy is similar. If you can attack or strike the opponent first in chess, you have advantage and can win the game.

I = Initiative
Let me clarify about Implosion and atomic bombs to Shamash and Zombieslayer. Please regard me as one of them 1. story teller 2. historian 3. messenger. Will you blame the messenger, for example postman bringing a bad news that one of your best friend or relative died, you failed the exam, lost a job, your investment failed and lost a lot of money etc. Most of you will be familiar with the movie, " Titanic. " Although movie version is different from true version, why the two innocent innocent actor Leonardo De Caprio and actress Kate Winslet should suffer in such a tragedy. Will you blame the director James Cameron for creating such a tragic story?. At the end of the movie, the director reminded you that it is just a fiction by showing the two lovers were united happily afterlife by going the steps while people were cheering. As a historian you can review and analyze why and how leading to the dropping of atomic bombs in any standard history books in details. I did not exaggerate or distort any of the historical facts. In Japan, they always have Hiroshima and Nagasaki anniversary ceremony every year and museum. Recently, the US and British delegates, winners of second world war attended the anniversary ceremony. Japanese are very appreciative of the Navy and US armed forces for cleaning up the mess in Fukushima nuclear disaster after Tsunami. I believe Japanese and Germans can forgive their US after the war unlike those of Islamic militants in Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan they will still attack US even though we try to help them.

Regarding I for Initiative, let me give the analogy from the movie " A fistful of dollars " starring Clint Eastwood. The war with Japan and US is not a good analogy because US has superior firepower nuclear bomb near the end of war. Chess game has equal chances for both players of equal rank in the beginning. You can say that White has a slight advantage for moving first but if the two players take each turn with balck and white in two games, both have definite equal chances. In the movie A fistful of Dollars, all have the same type of guns- revolvers and no machine guns or heavy weapons but what makes Clint Eastwood survive and win the gunfights is his initiative or pre-emptive strike. In a spit second before his enemy can draw a gun and shoot him, he is the one who can do it first before the enemy. This is all about " Initiative" and if you can kill the enemy first, nothing much he can do to you now. This is the name of the game.

M = Material
I =Initiative
M = Material
P = Pawn structure
L = Lines
O = Officers
D = Development
E = Economy/Efficiency
S = Strategy

+ K = King

Chess Material are pawns, N, B, R, Q, K. The value of king is infinite because when we lose king ( mated ) the game is over. If the pawn value is 1, N & B is approximately 3, R=5. And Q = 9. These values are relative similar to Einstein's theory of relativity. Knights are more valuable in the beginnig of the game and if you can place it in the center of the chess board compared to bishops pair which will be more valuable when there are less pieces on the board. We try to capture the enemy pieces or scarifice material to win the game.

This thread is the bomb!
What a spirited discussion. However I think everyone's got their history a little off. The Nazi death camps were only encountered by Allied troops in '45, well after the back of the Wermacht had been broken, the extent of the persecution and extermination of Jews, Gypsies, blacks and political enemies was never known prior to either the US' or the Commonwealth's involvement in WWII. Britain and the Commonwealth only declared war on Germany as a response to annexing Poland, a direct contravention of a peace pact that weak-willed fool Chamberlain had negotiated with a complete mad man. Only Churchill, with his wit and far-seeing gaze had a real notion of just how evil Hitler was and how much of a war-monger Hitler was. On the day Chamberlain announced the peace pact Churchill stated (not necessarily verbatim), "England has been offered a choice between shame and war. She has chosen shame and will receive war." Now, excuse me, may have digressed, big Churchill fan, but the point is, if the British, Churchill excepted, could so wholly underestimate Hitler, what hope was there that the Yanks could see his true nature? To them, in '39, it was just another stupid European war. FDR, another far-seer, heeded the words of Churchill and was willing to commit the US into WWII but lacked support at home until Dec '41 when Pearl Harbour was bombed, though the States had been supplying logistical support to Australia since '39 which is why the strong defence ties even now betwixt the US and Oz.

Alright so now to the issue of nuclear weapons. Physicists: German, Jews, Kiwis, Yanks, Aussies, were well abreast of the concept of nuclear fission by '39. (Atomic fission had been achieved at the Cavendish labs, in England, by Rutherford, a Kiwi, and his team, in '32!) At the outbreak of WWII the British and the Germans began the nuclear race. It is not well known but an Australian physicist, Mark Oliphant (and a fellow South-Australian like Tipsy!), who had already overseen the development of radar, became the overseer of Britain's nuclear weapons research department. However, undermanned and under-staffed, Oliphant quickly realised they were pushing the proverbial uphill.

Oliphant took all the research and discoveries the British team had made to the Yanks, making repeated visits to the US in '40 and '41 to kick the Yanks up the bum re the nuclear race however they dragged their heels until Pearl Harbour. Suddenly the Manhattan Project was born. It still took the silly bloody Americans another 4 years to come up with a reliable nuclear weapon. By the by, Oliphant received a knighthood for his efforts, on radar, nuclear weapons and other works in defence of the motherland.

So: The work on the A-bomb was originally begun by the Allies as a response to the German threat, but it had nothing to do with dead Jews and everything to do with the perceived threat from the German scientists. The atrocities of the holocaust were not know until the war in the west was all but won.

Now: As mentioned by ace, the bombs were dropped on the Japanese as a lesser of two evils. The Japanese were a proud and stubborn race which had embraced the samurai tradition in a wave of nationalistic sentiment just as surely as the Germans had embraced the idea of a return to a Holy Roman Empire. (During medieval times, the Germans installed themselves as a restoration of the fallen Western Holy Roman Empire, this was the 2nd Reich, which is why Hitler termed his regime the 3rd Reich). An assault on Japan, an island filled with dug in artillery, anti-aircraft, machine gun emplacements and a population with a "death-before-dishonour" attitude would have been a long and bloody campaign that could have dragged into a decade. It is a measure of how stubborn the Emperor was, that it took TWO A-bombs to force a surrender! The Yanks dropped one, sat back and waited for a surrender. None was forthcoming so they took the opportunity to try a different ignition device and dropped a second. Perhaps the Emperor thought that such a devastating weapon was surely a one-off and that there was no way the Allies could possess more than one nuclear weapon. Perhaps the Emperor was just a ****! Who knows?

And thus this story ends.
Key points:
No country ever entered into war against the Axis because of the persecution or slaughter of Jews. The holocaust was only discovered towards the end of WWII.

There was no gaggle of Jewish refugees on the Manhattan Project. It was a collection of mostly US-born physicists (some of which were Jewish) who had been working in the field of nuclear fission for a while but needed a kick up the bum from an Aussie.

The Bomb on Hiroshima was dropped as a lesser of two evils. The second one dropped on Nagasaki was because the Emperor was a ****.

Sir Winston Churchill and Sir Mark Oliphant were great!

Tipsy has drunk too much and should have been in bed hours ago.

END

PS: On the subject of implosion: it's rarely good. Imploding force on unstable nuclei = nuclear weapon. Stars implode when they go supernovae and also when they form black holes. The Germans used imploding charges (shaped charges) to destroy French gun emplacements in WWII. I don't think we should use implode in the new name of this forum. What about:

1. Club for Chess Openings and Other Stuff
2. Club for Chess Openings (why change?)
3. Tipy's Terrific Type Fest!
4. All Hail Tipsy!

must differ, tipsy
You are right, tipsy, work did not start on the American atom bomb until the war began.
In 1939 Einstein -- a refugee from Germany then at Princeton -- wrote a letter to U.S. President Roosevelt encouraging work to harness the energy of the atom.
In 1942 the U.S. government then persuaded a number of Jewish nuclear physicists in America
(including those who were refugees from Germany) to work together to create a weapon that would harness the energy of the atom so as to end the war with Germany, win the race against Germany -- and Japan -- to build an atomic weapon, and to help free the inmates of the Nazi concentration camps, most of whom were Jewish.

This is public knowledge. For me, this was supplemented privately by the physicist who taught me physics as a boy, who learned it from his own research professor: Hans Bethe, who was chief of the theoretical division at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, which built America's first atom bombs.

en.wikipedia.org

en.wikipedia.org

If you read my first message, I suggested that the name of the club should be changed to " The Club for Chess Excellence " and I did not suggest to use new name including implode such as " Big Implosive Chess Club" I am using the familiar implosion in association as a tool to remember it easily. My main focus of attention in this thread is on chess and not on politics, humanity, racism and bad things about war but some how chess imitates our struggles in real life situation. Jews are very talented people and not only in science but you can see in any humanities, literature, philosophy, art, musics, etc. World chess champions Kasparov and Bobby Fischer are both jews. Kasparov is proud of being a jew but Bobby Fisher denounced jews. There are good jews and bad jews. Karl Marx is a German jew and his idea about communism is wrong because it did not work out in former Soviet Union and China. They have to switch back into capitalism. Did jews kill Jesus? I won't waste my time into this debate just like I won't waste my time to say somthing bad against prophet which can provoke unnecessary hatred and animosity although I believe in freedom of expression. Oppenheimer, father of nuclear bomb, who was the head of Manhatten project for making atomic bomb was a jew.

Oppenheimer was born in New York City on April 22, 1904, to Julius Oppenheimer, a wealthy Jewish textile importer who had immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1888, and Ella Friedman, a painter.
Einstein was not directly involved in inventing of the atomic bomb although he might have some knowledge of it. Although Oppenheimer was instrumental in making the atomic bomb he changed his mind later and became a pacifist similar to Andrei Sacharov, father of atomic bomb of the former Soviet Union. There are jewish traitors also. The disciple of Jesus, Judas is a jewish traitor. Ethel and Julius Rosenbergs jewish couple were top scientists in Manhatten atomic bomb projects. They were communists and communist sympathizers and they gave the secret on how to make the atomic bomb to Soviet Union. The two traitors were executed by firing squad. For details of Oppenheimer and Rosenbergs please go to the above links at the top of this message.

Please let me correct my message.
Husband and wife jewish couple who gave the atomic bomb secret to former Soviet Union were executed by electric chair and not by firing squad. I believe it is more humane to kill by lethal injection nowadays because high voltage electricity cause burns and lot of suffering before they became unconscious and died. Judas who betrayed Jesus by hanging himself.

Sticking to my guns
I still think the forum should be renamed All Hail Tipsy   .....but the Club for Chess Excellence does have a certain ring to it. Seriously, though there are digressions in this forum, the bulk of discussion is still concerning openings so truly I am in favour of the name remaining the same.
