a rationale for the pre-deployment move, 7 Na3 in the Frenchand Black's 5th move -- (moves like 5...Qb6 or 5...Bd7) is a key branching point in this line of the Advance Variation. 7 Na3 is seen in the French with the idea of deploying the Queen's Knight to c2 to defend the d4 pawn -- especially as a rejoinder to a Black ...Nh6 with Black's intention of playing ...Nf5 (attacking White's d4 pawn). This is over-protection chess -- prophylactic chess, as Nimzovich would say. |

I just numbered it wrong in a hurry. There are only 6 moves there. Blacks follow up to this was ....cxd4, cxd4 ....nf5 nc2 ....Qb6 Bd3 ...Bb4 + Kf1 !! + = |

the enjoyment of the gamePersonally, Dorian (since you ask), I do, however, prefer systems that allow the vigorous build up to a game-ending flurry of moves; I like that combinatorial rush, which I more often find as consequence of other opening systems. Having said that, I have noticed that the French remains a favorite defense, playing as Black, for several of the GameKnot masters ranked in the top fifteen. And in correspondence chess the French has never disappointed me, in terms of results. But we don't just play for results, do we? we play for fun, for creative flashes, and for the rush that comes from taking over the position and putting the game away. |

I Started to play a few years back, to avoid the E4 E5, and Sicilion, which tortured me back then. But I've gotten used to it, and seem to do ok with it. I see where it is not as exciting as some. |
