Ruy Lopez |

There is alot of theory and different types of positions which can arise (closed/open) and the opening was once considered excellent for white (especially during the Bobby fischer period) but recent chess has brought it back into top tournament play. This opening is good if you want to learn the theory. However, for a less theory packed opening the Scotch Gambit is good but if your opponent is well prepared (as is usually the case with CC as databases are allowed) then black can achieve a slight advantage. |

So is the Ruy lost? |

The Ruy is an excellent opening but I am just saying that to play it means you must learn the large ammounts of theory. Some people don't like to learn so many moves and play a simpler opening such as the Scotch. Furthermore you must be comfortable with open and closed positions. Some people like me do not like both and therefore choose to play different openings but if you like the positions arising from a Ruy then it is fine. Basically if you have the time and you like it play it. (That goes with all openings). |

By the way, the fact that there is a lot of theory means nothing, unless you are Fide Master or better . Below that level it's really difficult to find someone who can outplay you only because you have not played the best move in a position (except in the Marshall gambit perhaps). |
