Stonewall continued
I played the Stonewall back in the fifties (before I gve up chess for fifty years) and did well with it then. Playing it now online somtimes, I find that I need to play c3 early to counter an early Bf5 with a Q-side maneuver involving Qb3. I've been impressed by a recent opponent who plays the Stonewall or Colle all the time and does very well, maintaining a higher rating than I've ever reached or am likely to reach.

I learned the Stonewall back in junior high or maybe high school from a book called How to Think Ahead in Chess by Horowitz`and Reinfeld. Anybody know that book?

Recently I've been seeing how Bird's Opening (f4) transposes easily into the Stonewall (as played, for instance by the player mentioned above).

It's a good opening.

I've got one word for it. OVERRATED!

I went through my stint of 1.f4, and have tried them all, Stonewall attack, Reverse Leningrad, Reverse Classical, etc. Too many holes. Partially due to non-commitment (vs White making the first "committal" move in the event of the Stonewall Defense) it seems so much easier for Black to tear down the Stonewall attack than it is for White to tear down the Stonewall Defense. That said, Black must understand when the Stonewall defense is good, and when it's outright bad. It's not one of those defenses you can "premeditate" that you are going to play.

Stonewall attack.
I have had experience with this opening. It is quite a good opening because it always uses the same formation so you don't have to worry if White plays an unexpected opening.

Stonewall attack
The Stonewall with white is ok for strong players but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone below 1800.

It has holes and it involves too much commitment with the pawns.

But what do I know...I'm only 1400 here.

The Stonewall is not effective against Kings Indian Defense type formations, which are common at higher levels.
