Halloween GambitIt offers very active tactical play for White and strong center. Its a deadly weapon against unprepaired players. I already had few wins by playing it here on GK. And few losses too off course, mostly from higer rated players who simply had better combinations in the middle game. If I improve my middlegame tactics, I am sure this opening would give me a lot of victories and fun. I know this is not very sound opening, but what are your opinion about it? Do you play it from time to time? |

Great openingI never get to play the Halloween Gambit normally as I will never be caught in a 4 knights, simply because I think it usually leads to boring chess; but the Halloween is anything but boring. For those who are wondering, the opening goes like this: 1.e4 e5; 2.Nf3 Nf6; 3.Nc3 Nc6; 4.Nxe5!? White sacrifices a full knight, but has awesome initiative and space, and can undevelop black's knights at will. A normal continuation would be: 4...Nxe5; 5.d4 Ng6; 6.e5 Ng8; 7.Bc4. If anyone knows how to post the diagrams then perhaps they would care to post diagrams for these positions. |

FIRST PART: 1. e4, e5 2. Nf3, Nc6 3. Nc3, Nf6 4. Nxe5?! I usualy start with 1. Nc3 and I saw that most of the players continue with 1. ...e5. then I continue with 2. e4, Black responds with Nf6 and soon Black accepts 4 Knights opening (this is from my experiences only). |

If Black accepts, it goes like this: 4. ... Nxe5. And now comes the fun part: SECOND PART: The hunt for the Knights 5. d4, Nc6 6. d5, Ne5 7. f4, Ng6 8. e5, Ng8 9. d6 and you have this position: White has the center, and his bishops have enough space for activation. Black has problems with development. |

Now all is up to you to make more pressure on Black's position and make even more advantage. Position offers lots of tactical combinations, its not easy to play but if you are a daring player it is definitely fun. |

I sometimes lose (against much higher rated players), but then I simply analyze what went wrong and how they replied to my moves and how they managed to stop my attack. Most of my opponents don't know for this opening and they reply in many different ways... most of those moves are out of theory but they are still very interesting.. On the other hand, victories are really great - as you said, when it works, its like a firework )) |
