The Trompowsky (1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5)

Also known as the "Martian Tromp" for its unusual positions.

Black's best response is 2...Ne4, but 2...d5 and 2...e6 are also playable.

Isn't that the move you play on move three, after
1. d4 Nf6
2. Bg5 Ne4
3. Bh4/Bf4

and then 3. ... c5.

But hey, of course you can get your Trompowsky opponent out of his 'comfort zone' immediately this way. GK's database doesn't seem to refute your move!

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. dxc5?!
1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. dxc5?!

I recently reached this position in a Gameknot game. 4. dxc5?! surprised me (especially coming from an 1871!). I played 4...Qa5+?! resulting in 5. Nd2 e6?? (much better was 5...e5!) 6. c3! with the following position:

Now, black can't regain his pawn because 6...Nxc5?? fails to 7. b4 and 6...Nxd2 (which I played) failed to 7. b4!!

So what is the best answer to 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. dxc5?! Is it 4...Nc6? Also worth considering is 4...Na6!?!?

This to me looks like the best reply. White should continue 5. Nd2 Naxc5 and then 6. Ngf3 or 6. Nxe4. Also, 5. c6? is answered with 6...Qb6. Unfortunately, GameKnot's DB has next to nothing on the position, but what does the club think?

4...Qa5+ is fine. Then after 5. Nd2, your suggestion of 5...e5 is good!

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. dxc5?! Qa5+
1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. dxc5?! Qa5+ then 5. Nd2 is best:

Now after 5...e5 what is best for white?

Here is my recommendation (from best to worst)

6. Bxe5!? Nxf2! 7. Kxf2 Qxc5+ 8. e3 Qxe5
----------Nc6 7. Bf4 Bxc5
----------Bxc5 7. e3 Bxe3! 8. fxe3 Qxe5
6. Be3 Nxc5 7. Ngf3 Qc7?!
6. Bg3?! Nxg3 7. hxg3 Nc6
