Well done sonata296taufiq, your annotation was also very informative, unfortunately I was not able to read any further than the 1st page for some reason, will try latter. |

...I tried to answer most of your questions, but I still don't know what Ion meant with a "thematic break".. |

Thematic break...Here's the sort of thing that might happen - a pick-up game of a few years ago, under a 10-minute time control: White: R.E. Black: I.A.D. King's Indian Defence, 2006 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.c4 d6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.e4 0-0 6.Be3 Nd7 7.Be2 Ng4 8.Bd2 e5 9.d5 Nf6?! ... Over-cautious. Black could and probably ought to have played the 'thematic break' right now: 9...f5. 10.0-0 Nc5 11.Qc2 a5 Played to shore up the knight's position at c5. 12.Be3 b6 13.b3 Ng4 14.Bxc5 bxc5 15.Rfd1 f5 The thematic break. Already White is faced with the decision: ought he take on f5? It is often very unhealthy to do so, as Black can get a mobile pair of pawns charging down the board. 16.Bd3 f4 17.Be2 h6 18.a3 Nf6 19.h3 g5 20.Nh2 h5 21.Nf3 g5 w The sort of attack Black is aiming for. White has very little play on the other flank. 22.hxg4 hxg4 23.Nd2 Bb7 With some notion of reinforcing the attack by ...c6 etc 24.Qb2 Rb8 25.Re1 Qe8 26.Nb5 Qh5 27.Qc3 Kf7 28.Bd1 Rh8 29.Kf1 Qh1+ 30.Ke2 Qxg2 31.Qxa5 f3+ w Black's attack has broken through on the K-side, but the White King is fleeing to the Q-side. Meanwhile, White has conjured up some play on the Q-side. Quite a battle is in prospect! 32.Kd3 Rhc8 33.Rf1 Nh5 34.Nxc7 Bh6 35.Bc2 Ng3 36.Nb5 Ke7 37.Rfd1 Qxf2 38.Kc3 Qe3+ 39.Kb2 f2 w It looks all up for White, doesn't it? But White isn't dead yet! 40.a4 Bg5 41.Qb6 Bc6! 42.Qa7+ Bd7 43.Nf1 Nxf1 44.Rxf1 Ra8 45.Qb6 Bxb5 46.cxb5 g3 47.Rh1! Qd5+ 48.Ka2 Qc3 49.Qb7+ Kf6 50.Qd7 Qxc2+ 51.Ka3 ... b Black has won a piece, but now White's counterplay is very serious. How can Black gain time to attack? 51....Rxa4+!! 52.bxa4 Qc3+ 53.Ka2 Qc4+ 54.Kb2 Qb4+ 55.Kc2 Qxe4+ 56.Kb2 Qb4+ 57.Kc2 Qd2+ 58.Kb1 g2 59.Qxd6+ Kf5 60.Qe6+ Kf4 Surely White is running out of counterplay? w 61.Rh4+ Bxh4 62.Qh6+ Ke4!! Playing to the gallery. Probably 62...Bg5 was good enough, but this temporary 'sac' leads quickly to a finish. 63.Qxd2 g1=Q+ 64.Ka2 Qxa1+ 65.Kxa1 f1=Q+ 66.Ka2 Qc5+ 67.Kb1 Qd3+ 68.Qc2 Qxc2+ 69.Kxc2 Bd8 Shutting down for good any threat from the White pawns. White resigned here: 0-1. |
